When did you stop progesterone after IVF?

Hello,

I just had my 8 week scan with my ivf clinic and thankfully all is well. I was told to stop my progesterone cyclogest pessaries instantly. I still have 15 left in my last pack. When did you stop taking yours? I presumed I would be given more today and sure I’ve read people stop at 12 weeks...

Wondering whether it’s an nhs funding thing and to go from 2 a day to one a day. Also read if you stop suddenly you start spotting?

Thank you 😊
Xx

I was told to stop at 8 weeks too, however due to previous miscarriage I insisted on continuing to 12 weeks which the nurse allowed me to do but informed it was pointless because the placenta all looked right and was already doing the job of producing progesterone.

I'd probably finish what I've got if I were you and then don't worry about it. I was told to stop, in retrospect, I probably should have just stopped, I think I had certain side effects for longer because I didnt stop. I also had some bleeding after 8 weeks (baby was fine) which was the main reason I had wanted to continue with progesterone (thinking I wouldn't bleed at all) but it actually made no difference!

Thank you @Pinktruffle - yes that’s my thinking to finish the pack. Will do one a day which takes me to 10 weeks. Sure it’s fine to stop and the placenta has taken over but feeling the anxiety over not doing one tonight so will carry on.
I would definitely have done exactly the same as you and asked for more certainly after a mc.
Even heard on a podcast someone talking about pessaries until 12 weeks so it was playing on my mind!
Thanks so much for advice xxxx

I was told to stop at 12 weeks, I wonder if each clinic just does their own thing, I’ve seen people stop anywhere between 8-12 weeks.

ivfbeenbusy · 07/09/2020 21:55

12 weeks here too - but I've got twins on board so don't know that made a difference

DreamMeOffMyFeet · 07/09/2020 22:10

I've used 2 different IVF clinics and both said stop at 12 weeks.

@croft85 congratulations!! Amy IVF clinic suggesting wining off and stopping during week 12 counting from the first day of my last period (so week ~10 after transfer). All went well, no spotting. I think during week 10-12 placenta takes over progesterone production.

Viletta · 07/09/2020 22:15

Also I fully stopped 3 days before my 12w scan and it was very reassuring seeing that all goes well after.

Thanks everyone. Confused why I’ve been told to stop at 8 weeks - what dosage were you on please @Viletta @DreamMeOffMyFeet @Snorlax86 - I’m on I think the norm - 2x 400mg cyclogest per day - wondering whether taking 1x 400mg at night will be enough.

Things is I obviously trust the nurses but I had very short luteal phase, that’s one of my problems and low progesterone.

Confusing! Xx

Hi @croft85 I was told to stop at 8 weeks, not on the NHS. I was a bit worried but my clinic have normal success rates and I assumed they wouldn't let cycles fail over something as cheap as progesterone passaries. So far so good since I stopped, I'm a week away from my 12 week scan so I'll know more then.

BeHereNowx32 · 08/09/2020 07:21

Congrats
With a fresh cycle I was to stop after the 7 week scan. With frozen, it was 12 weeks.

I was on x3 200mg utrogestan per day, both cycles. First cycle was a fresh cycle at one clinic (albeit 7 years ago) and most recent one this year at a different clinic was a frozen, who said I could start weaning off from about 10 weeks to fully stop at 12.

I didn't have IVF but had three miscarriages and bleeding early on in this pregnancy so my Dr said carry on with progesterone until 14 weeks

Frazzlerock · 08/09/2020 08:59

I also didn't have IVF but several MMC. This pregnancy I started taking progesterone at 7 weeks when I started bleeding and was told to stop at 16 weeks by my recurrent MC consultant.

Viletta · 08/09/2020 11:14

@croft85 I was on 4x100mg morning and evening, so 800mg a day suppositories. I also had aspirin and prednisone.

Snorlax86 · 08/09/2020 12:45

I was on 2 x 400mg cyclogest per day. It was a frozen transfer, when I had medicated cycles I was told to take 400mg per day (it would have been 12 weeks also if it worked).
