Hi everyone,

I started taking pregnacare as soon as I found out I was pregnant, im now 14 +3.
This is my first pregnancy, did anyone take these vitamins throughout their whole pregnancy or just the first 12 weeks?

I've been taking them throughout, now 33+6. Pre-pregnancy I took multi vitamins anyway, all my bloods have been good during pregnancy including iron, just helps reassure me that we are both getting the minerals and things.

I must say, I have never taken any vitamins bar folic acid and vitamin D for the first 12 weeks. I couldn't swallow the tablets, but also thought pregnacare was very expensive. I have always had perfect bloods for all vitamins etc so it didnt appear to make any difference to me.

@SqidgeBum I was advised to take them by my doctor at my first visit so just went with it and bought them.

Oh well if your doc says take them then I would just take them for the whole pregnancy. There must have been a reason the doctor recommended them. I told my midwife I wasnt taking them and she saw no issue.

I took just a folic acid and vit d supplement for the first 12 weeks and then switched to Pregnacare for the rest of my pregnancy.

I use the Breastfeeding one now. I try and got hold of the Boots versions though because they're cheaper but do exactly the same thing.

Ohhiiii · 05/09/2020 18:44

I've taken them the whole way through but I think I had a vitamin deficiency before (ridge in nail, splits in corner of mouth if I don't take them). Just reassures me I'm getting extra vitamins if the baby steals them off me

dementedpixie · 05/09/2020 18:46

do they get commission for recommending pregnacare?? There are plenty of cheaper alternatives and NHS only recommends taking folic acid (first trimester) and vitamin D. No real need for the other ones.

bedjolly · 05/09/2020 18:47

I was blood tested at 12 weeks was only taking folic acid at the time and they said I was deficient in iron. Started taking pregnancare now I'm 'borderline deficient' I suppose it's a bit better but they are supposed to be taken along with a healthy diet so now I'm trying to eat more iron like weetabix.

Littleone12 · 05/09/2020 19:22

this is my first pregnancy so I've just taken the advise and not questioned anything. I wasn't even aware other brands were cheaper ect. My doctors are not very good at explaining things they are very conveyor belt in and out as quick as possible.

I’ve always taken them for the whole of pregnancy and then taken the new mum version after pregnancy. I actually started taking the pregnacare new mum ones again about a year ago (I’m not a new mum!) because I really think that whatever combo they have in them suits me the best.

YouBringLightInToADarkPlace · 05/09/2020 19:25

I've taken them (well, the cheap alternatives) all the way through this pregnancy (now 32 weeks).
I'm glad I did, not been ill so far like I was almost continuously with DS1. Also my logic was if Covid hit me I'd be more boosted 🤷‍♀️...

SqidgeBum · 05/09/2020 19:28

I didnt realise there was advise to take them. I thought the nhs only advise folic acid for first 12 weeks and then vitamin d. My midwives over my 2 pregnancies (I have never seen a doc while pregnant) has never advised pregnancy vitamins. Honestly, I just thought of them like any other pregnancy product rather than something that is 'recommended'.

scotgal99 · 06/09/2020 11:21

I took folic acid & vitamin D from conception until 12 weeks & have taken chewable Pregnacare vitamins from 12 weeks onwards. The hospital gave me vitamins but swallowing tablets was bringing on my morning sickness hence the chewable ones!
