No movements at 23-24 weeks - help!

Hi all. Hoping for a little bit of advice/reassurance about movements. I'm 23 1/2 weeks, with an anterior placenta. I know this cushions movements a bit, but apart from one very small (possible?) twitch on Tuesday I have so far felt nothing, and I'm starting to worry. I raised it at my 20 week scan and the consultant said give it to 24 weeks - which is only a few days away now. I'm very slight, if that makes any difference, and though I have a small bump it's easily missable unless you knew me (though baby was a pretty average size at 20wk scan).

Has anyone else had the time issue? How long realistically should I expect to wait?! Should I be pushing for more checks? Seeing midwife next week, so will have an opportunity to raise it then I hope. Thanks guys!

You need to ring triage ASAP and speak to a midwife and listen to their advice. The number should be in your pregnancy book

@rudolphian I spoke to a midwife last week and they really seemed only interested in changes in movement...which is hard for me as I haven't got any. I guess I could ring again, but they generally just say wait until 24 weeks.

You need to phone and insist on going in. They can listen to the baby's heart and give you a scan.

Thanks both. Trouble is, they did listen to heartbeat last week and it was fine...and there have been no changes since then apart from the fact I still can't feel anything! I just wondered if this was normal or not for an anterior...but sounds like maybe not. Were yours anterior too?

I had a day of reduced movement when pregnant, I called the midwife unit at the hospital and they told me to come straight in. I headed in, they hooked me up to a machine for a while to measure the movement, luckily all was well.
Can you call them and say that it is a difference and reduction in movement? Hopefully all is okay but it'll give you peace of mind to get double checked

I'm sorry cant really remember with mine. Not sure how far gone I was before I could feel the movement.

Whilst you must always get concerns about movement checked out my personal experience was this which may put your mind at rest: fourth pregnancy, anterior placenta, first felt the odd movement from around 19 weeks but very sporadic and very weak, more fluttery than kicks. 24 weeks before I felt proper kicks. Baby perfectly healthy (now 3).

I had an anterior placenta and the only way I felt movements for a long time was by lying down with my hands on my tummy. I could then feel and see the movements externally (also slim built), but was completely unaware of anything happening inside. Maybe you could try that for a while? No TV or distraction, just concentrate on what you’re feeling under your hands for a while.

Definitely try this.

I have looked after ladies before who genuinely haven’t felt movement at all or very sporadically all the way through pregnancy! Usually they end up having regular CTG monitoring in the third trimester and have some extra scans before that. If you still aren’t feeling anything at 24 weeks, you should be seen by a consultant. If you are worried, you can ask to be seen by a midwife just for reassurance.

Thanks so much for these. I've just been seen down at triage and they listened in and baby seems to be fine. They did say I may be seeing them a lot as anterior placenta is a bit of a nightmare...!

@Fancy1993 I will def try the lying with no distractions thing...I often try half an hour and then get bored/distracted/have to do dinner but maybe if I am firm and stick at it...

Hi OP. Yes, an anterior placenta is definitely known to cushion movement. Some women don't feel anything until about 24 weeks even with a posterior placenta. The advice is always to get checked out if you're worried, but it does help to know what's normal

I have an anterior placenta and it was 23-24 weeks before I started to feel anything, and it started off as the odd kick, then progressed from that.

Where I am, we’re advised to raise lack of movement (not change) at 24 weeks. So I would personally be telling the mw next how concerned I am.

I had an anterior placenta with dd and it really cushioned movements. I had to work to feel her. This one is a posterior placenta and the difference is huge.

Hi, i am in the same boat, im only 21 weeks so far so I am really hoping to feel something soon, its hard because this is also my 1st pregnancy and once or twice i have thought maybe i felt something but i really dont know. For those who have experienced this have they felt moment in the lower abdomen?
