I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

@composed my dr told me to drink lucozade. I just didn't think it would be good long term. No idea what to drink instead.
@LucindaE never thought about that but it's worth a try!

Doughnut100 · 22/10/2020 22:38

I'm 13 weeks now and it's getting worse not better. I start a new job in 2.5 weeks I swear if it's not better I don't know how I'll cope. Some of you ladies have it much worse than me even, my heart goes out to you all. My poor neglected partner, I'm secretly glad he's working all the time, I just want to be left alone so I can roll around without feeling ashamed for being such a slob. Urgh.

composed · 22/10/2020 23:44

@gretagreengrapes bless you, please dont be so hard on yourself. Hg is a very horrid condition which makes doing the smallest thing impossible. Try and do as much as you can and allow yourself the time and understanding that it wont always be like this and it will end but fir the timebeing we aren’t our normal selves.

@Doughnut100 I am so sorry to hear about you feeling so unwell and the new job, are you on any meds? if so and they arent working as well have you tried going back go docs for different ones?

BB2021 · 23/10/2020 09:55

@composed I find 6:30 and 14:30 work best for me as I can sleep through the nighttime nausea. As long as you're leaving 7-8 hours between each one.

Doughnut100 · 23/10/2020 11:06

Unbelievable. I just called the gp surgery to make an appointment about meds and the male receptionist took it upon himself to "manage my expectations" by telling me that they don't prescribe them "willy nilly" for "morning sickness". What an absolute twat.

BB2021 · 23/10/2020 12:07

@Doughnut100 that's awful! I complained about the receptionist at my GP surgery as she laughed at me when I said I was still being sick at 15 weeks. She told me to describe my symptoms and said 'is that all?? I had morning sickness when I was pregnant and I just needed some ginger'. She made out like I was weak and making a fuss. I was so upset.
You should make a complaint!

gretagreengrapes · 23/10/2020 12:20

@doughnut100 the receptionists should be making no comments about health presentations or advice! Totally not their role. The more I read on here the more I realise how lucky I am with my surgery. Sometimes I just say "pregnancy problems" . I'm not sure the receptionist should even ask you how many weeks.

gretagreengrapes · 23/10/2020 12:20

Oh I realise it was @bb2021 saying that, oops

Doughnut100 · 23/10/2020 12:22

@BB2021 what is wrong with people!? And why are receptionists getting involved at all? Especially male ones. I'll wait to speak to the doctor thanks. Usually I'd make a complaint, that's my style, uppity woman! But I don't have the energy, I've got enough else to worry about.

Hope everyone is keeping on keeping on today. @composed hope your meds are ok

BB2021 · 23/10/2020 12:27

I've had such varying experiences with the same GP surgery. Some of the receptionists don't ask questions and others do. One of the GPs is extremely sympathetic and helpful and others just tell me to eat little and often and drink ginger tea. One of the GPs always gives 30 tablets and a another only ever gives 10. As I can only ever get emergency appointments with whoever is available I never know how much of a battle I'm going to have on the phone. I'm seriously considering emailing the practice some info about HG or putting some leaflets through the door about it as there is no consistency with them. I swear half of them don't know what HG is

Wingingitatlifesincebirth · 23/10/2020 12:47

I’ve hit six weeks pregnancy no 3 and although I haven’t vomited as yet I am feeling absolutely rough ! I had really hoped for a pregnancy minus tablets but this time round the taste in my mouth Is absolutely vile any tips for this ladies ?

composed · 23/10/2020 17:10

@BB2021thank you for the asvice re meds, I really struggle during the day first thing and slowly at night so will think about taking my meds around those times. Its only thru taking ondansetron can I actually eat and keep anything down. Showering/bathing/brushing teeth has become my nemesis again, Ive bought a baby toothbrush to try as best I can (petrified to even think whats happening to my teeth). So sorry to hear about the rubbish go receptionists, at ours it depends who you get but I also have a battle getting enough meds as one go gives 30 and another none at all. Jesus if only they could experience what its like even for one day what an eye opener that would be.

@Wingingitatlifesincebirth I’m still struggling with the vile taste NOTHING gets rid of it so I keep having to sip something a bit sweet more often than not to get rid of it for a few moments.

LucindaE · 23/10/2020 19:21

gretagreengrapes It is very dismal, and worse for those suffering now, with these restrictions. Things will almost certainly improve. Take it an hour at a time at its worst.
doritadiva I do hope it might help. Try not to fret about the sugar aspect. Many on these threads have practically lived on tinned peaches and the juice for weeks.
BB2021 What a nerve for the receptionist to take it on herself to say that. So rude.
Donought100 Might they let you work from home at the new job? I so agree with others, could they add something to your meds? How arrogant of male receptionist to see fit to lecture you like that!
Composed Fine advice.
wingingitatlifesincebirth I found that barley sugar helped - though it does increase saliva. I got it from an old fashioned sweet shop, but I believe you can still get them online.

Good weather for staying in bed, here in Mid Wales at least. I hope eveyrone is resting as much as possible. I still can't get over the know-all receptionists (particularly the male one) the stinginess of Onadansetron prescriptions doled out ten tablets at a time. Mother Hen is indignant and would like to peck somebody...Grin

Hi ladies, I’m just wondering if anyone might have any advice... I’ve had severe nausea and vomiting since week 5 (currently week 14 almost 15) and most of it I’ve been house / bed bound! I’m just starting to get out a little bit when I can - but I’m really struggling with wearing a mask! Does anyone have any tips? I automatically feel like I’ll pass out and throw up all at the same time. Are you wearing one or is it justifiable to say you are exempt?
Also sending so much love and strength to you all, I have never felt so truly miserable in my life, it is truly momentous what you are all doing and going through! And not something most people truly understand or give credit for! Flowers

Anyat212 · 24/10/2020 22:35

Hi wishing

I don't know the official stance on it but I would assume a HG sufferer / anyone suffering with bad pregnancy related sickness would be exempt from wearing a mask if needed. When I was last in hospital I was told a few times I didn't need to wear it if it was making me feel sick, even when having a scan. Do you wear the disposable ones? I find the fabric ones better they are thinner. Hope you feel better soon!

Well I've had a rough week, I'm 18 weeks today and I feel like I've took several steps back. I've had the worst day in a long time today, I've threw up everything I've ate today and I'm current laid out feeling very sorry for myself. Nausea is brutal. Can anyone recommend any good anti acid/reflux meds? Ideally what I can buy over the counter? I know it's been mentioned a few times throughout the thread but I'm struggling to find the names.

Hope everyone is coping x

bex757 · 25/10/2020 09:21

So I started avomine on Thursday, felt better stopped throwing up, then Friday started to feel sick again but could keep food down, until yesterday where I can't keep anything down again, and this morning I still can't keep anything down, any tips? Should I go back to the doctors for something else? I struggle with tablets as it is, and they have said I will be admitted to hospital if I can't keep anything down!

Wingingitatlifesincebirth · 25/10/2020 17:38

@bex757 absolutely go back and ask for something else I basically threw up various types of meds before getting the right one for me
Involving several hospital visits xx

LucindaE · 25/10/2020 19:35

Wishing14 Welcome. Sorry you are suffering. You have already had great advice about your query about face masks. Everyone is very supportive on this thread. Here is my normal spiel, which I hope will help. Most sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20. Even those who are unlucky enough to suffer throughout generally are not as ill later on as they are in the first part. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Kesostix are worth buying online or from a chemists, as while they aren't they best test of dehydration, hospitals take them seriously. Some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke, ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange, 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, Rubicon sparkling mango drink , raspberry Lucozade sport and frozen ice cubes of flat Lucozade sport . Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels, slices of melon and mango, grated cheese, baked potatoes, grated cheese, bagels and biscuits.
Anya212 Great advice for Wishing14 Would it be Omprazole you are thinking of? I am not sure if you can get it over the counter. I hope someone else knows. Some say that Gaviscon tablets are helpful, and less bloating than the liquid. I am not sure if Ranitidine is back on the market; some was contaminated, or something, and supplies were withdrawn earlier in the year.
bex757 If Avomine isn't helping, do ask for something else. There are various meds and combinations that they can try.

bex757 · 25/10/2020 20:27

I struggle with taking tablets anyway, so would rather some other way of taking medicine! I haven't drink any for over 24 hours- tried a ice lolly but didn't work- starting to feel dehydrated now.

gretagreengrapes · 26/10/2020 12:14

How do you decide when to contact your GP / midwife? Or just accept its a terrible day and write the day off. I find it hard to know when I should be contacting them sometimes.

Wingingitatlifesincebirth · 26/10/2020 14:00

@gretagreengrapes I’ve had a terrible morning only 6 weeks 3 days and despite my Meds ondansetron I haven’t been able to take fluids, have just taken a second tablet and hoping that I’ll keep down some fluids otherwise I’ll need to call the doctor. I think you know your own body and if you have been unable to keep down fluids for a period of time definitely don’t just call it a bad day- in my experience letting yourself get to
Rock bottom it’s a hard climb on the way back up and you need meds adjusted or admitted xx

bex757 · 26/10/2020 14:04

I am back at doctors this afternoon after 36 hours without anything staying down!

Wingingitatlifesincebirth · 26/10/2020 14:29

@bex757 I see that you cannot take tablets I have been prescribed melts as it really sets me off being sick. There are other options I hope you get sorted and manage to avoid being admitted is this your first pregancy ?

bex757 · 26/10/2020 15:16

I'm off to the hospital at 5pm as they have no bed currently so hope that changes!
