I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Alanares89 Welcome. Sorry you feel so bad. As this is your second pregnancy suffering, you don't need my 'have you got kesostix' 'do you find full sugar flat coke, ice lollies and the juice of tinned fruit help' and 'a good anti acid can make a big difference'. It must be very hard with a toddler. When did the doctor test your urine, as the dry skin and so on you mention are certainly signs of dehydration? Is your urine dark and scanty? It is all very confusing about ketones to someone non scientific like me, as it seems that they aren't the best test of dehydration, but they do take notice of their measurements in hospitals. Metacloparmide has helped many on here. I don't actually know myself how long it takes to work, but surely not more than a couple of days? If it doesn't help, don't hesitate to ask for something else. A lot of sufferers find that around week 10 is the worst, being the time of a hormonal surge. Did your symptoms ease at all in the last pregnancy? Most find that they improve at some point between weeks 14 and 21. Even those who suffer throughout, rarely suffer as badly as they did in the beginning. If water is unbearable, that's a great suggestion by winging about fizzy water. There's soda water too, and Elderflower Water, and ice cubes, and tonic water...
Jlw2020 Congratulations on making it through a working day. Don't feel guilty about using that excuse when so many are, and you are really ill. Lucky you, that they think you look rested. Smile
Waves to winging and everyone.

Hi. My first time posting on here as directed by lovely posted on my thread.
I'm 14 weeks, due in April and have had problems with extreme nausea before I even got the positive pregnancy test! The vomiting started around week 6.

Now at 14 weeks it's getting worse not better 😳 has this happened to anyone else? I'm already on meds. And find sour sweets help me to get rid of foul mouth taste.

Wingingitatlifesincebirth · 20/10/2020 15:42

@gretagreengrapes I unfortunately was sick all the way through both my two previous pregnancies I kept being told at 12, 16 , 20
Weeks I’d see an improvement. It can continue but hopefully that’s not the case for you. I did stop being so sick so much and had it much better near the end like once in the morning and I could totally manage that.

I have today at 5 weeks 4 days had terrible nausea this morning I just avoided throwing up felt horrendous so goodness knows how it will be next week. I’ve phoned GP for medication and started the fizzy water once again and noodles . X

composed · 20/10/2020 19:29

Sorry to hear everyone is struggling so much, it is somewhat heartbreaking that those with hg just wish away our pregnancies as we dont get to enjoy the ‘glowing’ images we see. I have spent the whole week in bed along with a trip to the hospital for fluids and meds. I wish they would administer meds via injection at home and drips. I find as soon as im out of hospital i spiral again

LucindaE · 20/10/2020 21:49

gretagreengrapes Welcome. Poor you. What meds are you on? They may well be able to find more effective ones. Everyone is very supportive on here. Some sufferers do continue to get worse before they get better some way after 14 weeks. ere is my normal spiel, which I hope will help. Most sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20. Even those who are unlucky enough to suffer throughout generally are not as ill later on as they are in the first part. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Kesostix are worth buying online or from a chemists, as while they aren't they best test of dehydration, hospitals take them seriously. Some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke, ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange, 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, Rubicon sparkling mango drink , raspberry Lucozade sport and frozen ice cubes of flat Lucozade sport . Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels, slices of melon and mango, grated cheese, baked potatoes, grated cheese, bagels and biscuits.
composed Sorry you feel so bad. That sounds so dismal. Remind me how far along you are? What you say about pregnancy being spoilt is so true.
wingingitatlifesincebirth Sorry to hear you suffered throughout. I hope you don't this time.
Waves to all.

Hello everyone. I hope some of you are having no sicky mornings!

I've had a run of some better days and returned to work on Monday after 5 weeks signed off. My GP continues to be great and has put me into reduced hours at 6 per day (I usually do 9/10hr days) but I crashed last night so badly. I was awake until 3am with nausea and retching and then started about sick at half 7. Work are fantastically flexible and I'm going to start a little later today so get some meds in and staying down for the morning but I am really worried I'm not ready to be back. I'm 15+2 and was paying I had turned a corner and settled on medication but I'm so frightened. It's so hard to know what to do isn't it.

I feel like whenever I start to feel better the rug gets pulled out from beneath me again despite keeping up with all the different meds and following all advice. This is so much worse than with my DD it's really getting my down now!

Just after a handhold I guess to see if I can get through the day.

KatieFTM · 21/10/2020 10:33

Hi @dimpous
Sorry to hear you had such a rough evening! It truly is awful to have a relapse. Rest has been the biggest healer for me. Try not to be too hard on yourself. If work are flexible, then use this to your advantage, I think they would rather have a part time worker than none at all.
What I would say is that, whilst relapses are no fun and really really tough mentally, it does mean that you have had some good days, so really appreciate that and know that there will be more of them in the future. They are a sign of things to come!
Sending you a big hug and a hello to everyone new to the thread.
I am almost 32 weeks now, the Castle is in sight @LucindaE ☺️

Dimpous · 21/10/2020 10:54

@KatieFTM thanks, you are right we need to hold onto the good days whilst we can. I have messaged my manager sick today and I'm mortified but I'm still being sick (now just dry heaving) every half hour and haven't kept meds or food down so need to sleep. I'm just so embarrassed to be unwell again so quickly after going back.

doritodiva · 21/10/2020 15:01

I get such a horrible taste in my
Mouth after having a drink. Don't get it with food bizarrely. The only drink I really can stand is lucozade but I'm worried I'm drinking too much of the stuff. Anyone recommend anything else?

BB2021 · 21/10/2020 17:13

On Sunday I ran out of Ondansetron. I had managed to drop down to one a day and hadn't vomited for 5 weeks - I thought I was getting better! It's such a struggle to get a prescription and I felt like I was improving anyway, so I decided to switch back to my leftover cyclizine that was previously ineffective for me. Today is Wednesday and I have spent all day throwing up. I have completely lost my voice from the vomiting and I feel weak and dizzy. Today I took my first day off sick from work in over 2 and a half years.
I've was lucky to get a GP appointment this morning and was prescribed a packet of 30 ondansetron. If I'm careful I can make these last a month. I had to fight to get 30 as the GP originally offered me 10.
HG is such an awful condition and I hate the regular battle I have to go through with doctors to get a medicine that clearly works for me!

I can't say I've enjoyed being pregnant and I'm pretty sure I couldn't do this again. I always thought pregnancy would be the easy part!

gretagreengrapes · 21/10/2020 17:28

@doritodiva I know what you mean about the foul taste! I can describe mine as chewing coins.
I've been mixing blackcurrant and apply squash with sparkling water and do find that helps "strip" the bad taste away. Or salt & vinegar crisps.

@bb2021 GP experiences are so variable, sorry you're having to push for that. I just tell my GP exactly what I want to make me feel better and they do it (obviously I'm not asking for inappropriate things), and I feel I am treated as a fully competent adult. Everyone should be treated like this. If you do run out before day 30, ask for more!

bex757 · 21/10/2020 17:32

Hey, I'm 6 weeks pregnant, and currently can't keep anything down, have got some anti sickness tablets but if it doesn't work I will end up in hospital, so any tips?

Jlw2020 · 21/10/2020 19:36

So my good day on Monday was a fluke, intact I went to bed with my head in a bowl and at some point obviously fell asleep. Called GP and they rang back as promised, it was an older guy who is actually my dermatologist too so knows me well - he explained the stomach acid etc and I thought he was just going to tell me to get on with it but gave me some gaviscon advance and switched my meds to Promethazine, one to be taken each night? Had a good old cry again at the dinner table, OH cooked pasta I had it plain with a sprinkling of grated cheese and managed 3 mouthfuls but the hysteria started. I don’t know why I do this, I think I’m so scared of being sick after food I dread eating it but I’m so frustrated that I know I’ll feel better after it but also can’t face it in equal measure? Just had a bath and finished off the pasta cold (in sauce too destined for his pack up! Oops) I find cold easier to pick at? Also really annoyed at myself gone to get pregnacare our the drawer now I’ve eaten and I took my cyclizine out of habit, he said do not mix! Dunno whether to leave new tablet til tomorrow. Also threw up in my mouth yesterday on an appointment, think the mask hid it well 🙈

Tiff94 · 21/10/2020 19:48

@BB2021 I know exactly what you mean with the ondansetron and them prescribing it. Only giving out 10 when I was told to take 3per day by my consultant I had to write into them and tell them it was ridiculous for me to try get a new prescription for every 3days and they finally switched me to the 30 box which I still need to pick up every 10 days. Where as I have two month supply of my other medication that I got from the hospital pharmacy.

LucindaE · 21/10/2020 21:43

bex557 Welcome. Much sympathy. What meds are you on? There are several they can try if they don't work. Try not to be too anxious about being admitted for fluids as it will help you a lot, but here are some tips below about drinks etc. Dimpous Can you work from home, give the situation we are in?
I do hope you have a better day tomorrow. If not, you might unfortunately need to go back on sick leave. It is a disappointment, but lots of sufferers on here go back to work too soon. I can't improve on what KatieFTMhas said.
KatieFTM I look forward to greeting you in the Pink Castle at the end of the Hyperemesis Horrror Run! Grin
doritodiva I hope some of the recommened drinks for bex557
might help you. For some reason, sugary drinks often seem to help the nausea best, and at least they are keeping you hydrated, which is most important.
BB2021 I am so sorry that you and Tiff94 have had difficulty in getting Ondansetron.
Jlw2020 The phobia sounds awful. Do ask the doctors if they can recommend a counsellor about such a dismal situation. If not, I am sure that Pregnancy Sickness Support can give advice about getting one on 024 7638 2020.
greatgreengrapes Excellent advice from you and everyone.
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

I am the same with ondansetron, they'll only give me ten at a time and I'm taking two a day!
I'm going to ask for more tomorrow, I don't think I will have much luck.
Every time I call they try to get me to stop
The ondansetron 'have you tried just cyclizine' yes!!
Then they try to scare me with the side effects....

BB2021 · 22/10/2020 11:57

The scaremongering with the side effects is just awful. As if we don't feel guilty and weak enough already! The risks of harming my baby have been a great source of anxiety for me. My husband keeps reminding me that there's barely a statistical significance to the so-called risks of Ondansetron

bex757 · 22/10/2020 13:07

I'm on avomine one a day for 10 days! I did manage to eat last night but have been ill all morning again! x

doritodiva · 22/10/2020 13:22

@gretagreengrapes it's horrible isn't it. I don't feel like I'm drinking enough because everything except lucozade is making me feel horrible

composed · 22/10/2020 19:14

Hi all, wanted to ask how does everyone takr their ondansetron those who are? Ive been given 4mg to take once or twice a day and atm having to take 2 cos of the peak but wanted to know how best to space them out? any advice

composed · 22/10/2020 19:15

@doritodiva I went through a stage in my last pregnancy when all i could have fluidwise was lucozade and irn bru, my midwife said if thats what is staying down then to carry on.

LucindaE · 22/10/2020 19:19

doritadiva I wonder if you could stand diluted Lucoazade? Perhaps Lucozade diluted with fizzy water? I have had that myself.
bunhead BB202012 bex757 and others. I am sorry to hear about the guilt inducing attitude towards Ondansetron. It is so right that the risks are so low, and the risks of severe dehydration must surely be well known to medics. This link gives good advice about how best to obtain meds, but it is so difficult, when feeling physically weak. Sometimes it helps to take an advocate (if this is allowed in the current situation).
