I'd wait another month or so.

JustHereWithPopcorn · 01/09/2020 17:52

I started buying after I knew the gender. If you feel ready it won't hurt to buy a few things. It's nice to get excited, or at least do some window shopping or start saving things online you might buy. I loved the baby shopping stage, so much fun and excitement for the future Grin

Glamourous12 · 01/09/2020 18:30

I dont even really know where to start being a first time mum. Hubby wants to wait till after 20 week scan

I'm 15 weeks and waiting until 20-24 weeks but I'm having twins and heard they can come early so I'll probably get everything in one online shopping binge 🤣

BertieBotts · 01/09/2020 18:45

Yes best to wait for 20 week scan.

Clothes are the easiest thing to buy loads of cute things because individually they don't cost very much but it all adds up and people will give you clothes as well.

Make sure to check the season and be aware babies can be in a size above or below their actual age, sometimes a couple of sizes, so it's hard to predict what you'll need when. You don't want to end up with loads of stuff you never use.

Start making wish lists instead :) it's useful to spend some time researching the big things like pram/car seat early so if you see any really good sales you can snap one up.

brainstories568 · 01/09/2020 18:49

If it were me, I'd be researching what I want now in terms of the big stuff to get an idea of prices as that's the only way you're going to know if you've got a "good" deal. We bought a lot at Black Friday and then after Christmas sales - I was due late March but delivered a month early as baby decided he was ready to come out.

Which magazine are really good for impartial reviews of baby stuff. It's about £1 for the first month so if you're organised you can get all of your shortlisting done then cancel the subscription. You also need to decide what you want to buy new (relatively little imo) and what you can easily pick up second hand/what's overpriced but you'd like anyway so you need to keep an eye out in charity shops, such as a Snuggle bath in my case.

@Glamourous12 We started researching The big stuff around 16-18 weeks - pram etc 😊 and screen shotting stuff and keeping all the pics on my phone. Didn’t buy anything until around 24 weeks but was nice to be able to flick back through the pictures and start buying the bits we had liked 😊

TheHappyHerbivore · 01/09/2020 19:03

I started buying small bits and bobs (some clothes, a bath) from about 12 weeks, then bigger items (pram, furniture etc) from 20 weeks.

It can help to spread the cost, so if you aren’t buying things til 26 weeks it’s still a good idea to save the money for when you do.

TheHappyHerbivore · 01/09/2020 19:05

It’s also worth considering that there is a long lead in time for buying prams sometimes - we bought ours in July for a baby due in December and they said we’d only just left ourselves enough time to be sure it would arrive. So for that at least I would plan ahead!

Glendaruel · 01/09/2020 19:10

Bought maternity clothes after 12 week scan but nothing for baby until 20 week scan. We've found things started being offered about 16 weeks from people clearing out baby stuff. I was about 25 weeks when we ordered pram. Look out on Facebook marketplace and ebay, I've got quite a few bits that way and helps with cost.

ablisha · 01/09/2020 20:57

I waited until after our 20 week scan x

Lockdownseperation · 01/09/2020 20:58

From 20 weeks but I would get research now. I do love a good list!

yarrow89 · 01/09/2020 21:04

I'm 13 weeks and although I haven't bought anything yet, I've started looking especially at the big stuff and a few maternity clothes fixes.

BuffaloCauliflower · 01/09/2020 21:12

Bought the travel system at 16 weeks because it was a good deal and we really wanted that one, but didn’t buy anything else till after 20 week scan.

didireallysaythat · 01/09/2020 21:15

I'd save a few eBay searches for the bigger ticket items after 24+ weeks? There's so much choice and you can get great deals on eg prams that people didn't check fitted in the car etc....

firsttimemummyxxxxx · 02/09/2020 08:04

I bought something the day I found out... I was too excited not to! X

ty1996 · 02/09/2020 08:11

Id start buying now.. who knows if there will be another lockdown and your forced to online shop where things may not be in stock🤷🏻‍♀️

Thegirlhasnoname · 02/09/2020 08:14

I researched what I wanted to buy beforehand but didn’t actually order anything until we hit viability

Trixie18 · 02/09/2020 08:22

I waited for the 20 week scan tgrn just bought the big stuff, pram, cots (twins for me), car seats etc and just a few clothes/blankets, hospital bag.
I was going to wait till 3rd trimester, about 30 weeks to get everything else but my boys came at 28 weeks (they're fine, 18 months now). My MIL and SIL went shopping and got everything else we needed in two hours day after they were born. I was really thankful the big stuff had been sorted so it was all fine.
Whatever happens don't stress, it may not all happen as you plan (almost certainly) but you'll muddle through, we all do xx

peonyrose87 · 02/09/2020 08:39

I'm 15 weeks and have bought a couple of sleep suits, but will wait to buy anything big until after 20 weeks!

ChampooPapi · 02/09/2020 09:50

Yes after 24 weeks ☺️

Glamourous12 · 02/09/2020 11:51

Thankyou all think I'm going to hold off until after 20 week scan and then start looking and planning. It will go super quick like the last 16 weeks have

In my experience the last weeks of pregnancy can really drag, so good to save some things to buy then to give you something to do!

But you can definitely start researching now and then get the best deals. I didn’t buy anything until after 30 weeks in my first pregnancy and like some pps have said that was quite tight in terms of getting the pram delivered, but it was still ok. Also would avoid buying loads of clothes now as you’ll get gifts and you won’t know the size of the baby relative to seasons yet.
