Is it bad?

Is it bad to sleep on your right side during pregnancy? I'm 32+4 and I genuinely just think my left hip is disintegrating 😂😂

Any side is fine according to my midwife x

ChlOeWh · 31/08/2020 23:15

@wannabebump ah thank godddd!! I kept reading "right side bad, chance of still birth, not the right blood flow to placenta if on right side" and it just stressed me out 🤦🏼‍♀️😂

I lie on both sides, and wake up during the night on my back sometimes. It happens. On your right side will be fine.

wannabebump · 31/08/2020 23:24

@ChlOeWh left is "better" so to speak, but right is perfectly fine. Both are much better than sleeping on your back. Even then, my midwife says it's inevitable we'll end up on our backs at some point in the night but it wakes us up to move.

I'm always switching between left and right side as my hips are also struggling!

ChlOeWh · 31/08/2020 23:28

I'm so excited to sleep on my right side now knowing it's not threatening to baby, how sad is that? 😂 maybe my left hip will come back to life eventually 😂 Thankyou!

As others have said, left is better. I tried to sleep on my left, but could never get comfortable and would always wake up on my right anyway.

I was literally coming to the pregnancy board to post this EXACT question!

I can’t for the life of me sleep on my left side. It’s so uncomfortable - I feel like I am squashing the baby, and it makes my back and shoulders hurt. I really hope I can sleep on my right side or I may actually never sleep again.

theresaplaceforus · 31/08/2020 23:54

I think left is meant to be better but right should be fine as well. NHS website just says sleep on side doesn’t specify I don’t think. When I wake up in the night I sometimes sleep on my right

FlashesOfRage · 01/09/2020 00:33

Either side reduces the risk of SIDS associated with back sleeping.

Left side rather than right is associated with better kidney function.

Right side sleeping has no greater risk of SIDS than left side sleeping 👍

Hope this makes it clearer! X

I couldn't sleep on my left side at all, even before pregnancy due to my ribs. I slept on my right side throughout the whole of my pregnancy and currently have a healthy 4 week old boy Grin

sarahc336 · 01/09/2020 06:36

Nope any side is ok, even if you wake up on your back which is very common for us normal back sleepers it's fine just roll back into a side Smile

I've slept on my right side throughout. Sleeping on the left gives me the burps and makes me feel sick.
