Should I follow doctor's advice on aspirin?

Hi all!

I'm 15+4 weeks pregnant and recently had my consult booking with a doctor.

On the phone, the doctor never told me they would be sending me out any aspirin in the post however, this morning I have had 2 boxes of 75mg delivered to my door.

When I rang the hospital, they just said they don't know why it was prescribed and to ring back Tuesday to ask a doctor.

I have no previous history of preeclampsia, any blood clot issues or high blood pressure.

I also have asthma and so I'm sensitive to asprin.

Should I take them anyway or wait?

I can't see any obvious reasons why I need them.

Many thanks in advance Smile

I have been told I’ll be prescribed at 12 weeks due to BMI being over 30 as this can make you more at risk of pre eclampsia... hope this helps! Xx

My BMI is normal so I don't think it's that either @firsttimemummyxxxxx Star

I think perhaps it’s worth waiting, especially if it hasn’t been mentioned before.

That’s interesting @firsttimemummyxxxxx my BMI is over 30 and it’s never been mentioned to me, I wonder if each Trust just do their own thing!

firsttimemummyxxxxx · 28/08/2020 14:03

@Snorlax86 I think so! X

I was prescribed aspirin as previous pregnancy I had elevated blood pressure right at the end and delivered early (36 weeks).
Is this your first pregnancy?

rebeccajdaniels · 28/08/2020 20:34

@TobysMum16 yeah this is my first pregnancy Smile

I just think it's so strange how it's not on my hospital notes why I was prescribed the aspirin Hmm

I've been prescribed aspirin from 12 weeks on account of my age (40). Are you an older mum-to-be?

rebeccajdaniels · 28/08/2020 21:13

@kell5120 no, I'm just 22 Smile

If you re asthmatic i d hold off to speak to the doctor as they really should have discuss it with you beforehand.

There are a few risk factors and you need to meet two of them.
One of them is being a first time mum! Not sure what the others are!

I was told I should have been offered it for pre-eclampsia for my age (39-40 during pregnancy), but has been abroad at the start of the pregnancy so it was too late anyway.

I would hold off until you’ve spoken to the doctor. Could be a mistake and you don’t want to take it unnecessarily, especially with asthma, so definitely mention that too. Not taking it until Monday won’t make any difference.

This may or may not be of benefit to you but I was at my Dr today and took a photo of my aspirin consent form as I've seen so many posts about aspirin lately.

I was prescribed aspirin due to low PAPP-A with my second child. Agree you should verify with the doctor why you've been prescribed it before you take it.
