Can a gender scan be wrong?

My sister just had an18 week gender scan the picture attached is the potty shot, they have told her girl, I just think it's a boy looking at that shot ??

My girls scan looked like that. It's normal I think.

You’re looking at one shot here. The sonographer will have seen it from multiple angles several times so I’d be inclined to trust what they say!

Scans can be wrong, although given they had such a good view in this case I would hope they had made an accurate judgement. The only fail safe way is a blood test -they test for the presence of a y-chromosome, if it is absent then the baby is female, present, obviously a male.

The NIPT blood test is the only way to be certain. I know a few people whose scans were wrong and they were all told girls but had boys. I have no idea about that picture but it’s a perfect angle so I’d hope the sonographer or doctor at least knew what they were looking at!

I've heard girl scans are more likely to be wrong than boy scans. Supposedly because in a boy scan they're looking for a penis which, if seen, can't really be anything else versus a girl scan they may think they don't see a penis but in fact it's a weird angle.

A few years ago yes, two doctors had scan and were told girl - boy arrived
