Scan weight accuracy

Hi all - grateful for some advice, I had a growth scan at 37+6 days which showed a very large AC - 97th percentile and weight estimate of 8lb 7oz. Baby was born 10 days later at 8lb 4oz.

Now, I smell a rat here, as the weight estimate was clearly out - could this mean that the AC measurement was out too?

I was referred for GD testing after the scan which came back negative and an induction, which I refused. Glad I did but still anxious about this AC reading.

To add, the can also showed excess fluid.

I was told massive baby! Extra scans! At least 11lb at birth. Had him 2 weeks early at 8lb.

Scan estimated weight is +/- 15% or so. The AC could have been overmeasured, but it’s also possible all the individual measurements were correct and your baby just isn’t the exact same shape as the standard calculation allows for (remember it’s like trying to estimate how much you or I weight by measuring the length of our thigh, around and across our heads, and around our abdomen - not easy!). Also possible the baby just didn’t grow between scan and birth - less likely but still!
All of this is why, where possible, more than one consecutive growth measurement (and other factors) are used to make decisions eg delivery recommendations. None of it is exact.
If your baby is out and we’ll, then you shouldn’t be anxious still?

@TenThousandSpoons0 is right- my son was like a long green bean and still is!

My sister was predicted a massive baby. They wanted to induce her but she refused. He went full term and was 5lbs 4 🙄 don’t know how they got that so wrong

My sister has placenta previa with her youngest and had lots of bleeding throughout pregnancy. After a scan they decided to bring him early as they thought he was 7lbs minimum. He came out 4lb 13oz! He’s a very healthy 10 year old now though
