Changing baskets - terrible idea or not?

We're thinking of nursery things we'll need when the little one arrives and I came across these changing baskets you can put on top of a chest of drawers. They look great but I'm wondering if it's a case of 'good on Instagram' rather than something that works practicality in real life. Anytime had experience with one?

My DD used to pee and poo the second you took her nappy off, even of you thought "there can't be any more to come out", there was. You need something completely wipe clean and washable.

No, you'll want a mat that is completely wipeable, those baskets look lovely but totally impractical.

A plastic change mat on the floor. As soon as the air hit DS, he'd pee and poop everywhere. I wouldn't have liked to have dealt with that at height. At least on the floor I could leave him there and run off for extra supplies if I needed.

I had the cheapest ikea changing mat, with the towelling covers. They are very good, completely wipe clean, but comfortable and not cold for the baby.

In fact all ikea baby stuff is good. I'd recommend it.

Floor is best if you have a c section I found.

My eldest could roll from birth, a wipeable mat on the floor was the safest option and it needed a complete wash down at least once a day, if not more.

I thought the basket was going to be to put the nappies, wipes etc in, not the baby.

Thanks for the quick replies I was thinking they wouldn't be a great idea, the idea of trying to clean poo out from inbetween a basket weave is not something I want to contemplate!

As above, the simpler, the better.

DS once had the most explosive dirty nappy, I'd ever seen. All down his legs, up his back 🙈 i whacked him in the sink to clean him as it was the only way.

Changing nappies is often about damage limitation. Do not get a basket 😂😂😂

Great things to get in ikea - the antilop high chair, muslins, the pack of flannels they sell in the baby section, blankets, baby gym and my personal favourite, the SMÅKRYP bath toy. Still played with by my nine year old, and nowhere for black mould to build up. Genius.

Ikea baby stuff is brill. I got loads of their bedding, soft toys, playgym. Lovely quality and not too expensive.

I do wonder if the makers of these things have ever actually had a newborn themselves when they come up with such lovely looking but completely impractical ideas.

We started with a changing mat on the floor of our nursery but quickly moved it too the bathroom after explosive mid-change poos that overshot the end of thr mat! I would recommend any wipeable mat on a hard floor!

I've never come across these before, but having had a second look at the link I think they could be quite unsafe. The photos show babies laying in these baskets on chests of drawers unattended and the fact that they have raised edges might lead parents to believe that babies can be left safely in them.

Just use a normal basket. Ours was 5 quid from home bargains.
One for downstairs, then a little wicker one for upstairs for night / first morning change.

I've never understood the hype for all these changing stations etc. I still change my 2 over my knee, including a wriggly toddler. It means I can change anywhere I can sit and they get used to every nappy change being done the same.

I'm surprised more mums don't change over their knee, we didn't have fancy changing units years ago yet all our mums managed.

I got the ikea change table and a wipe clean change matt. I didn’t even bother with a fabric cover ( mean mummy) as it’s just another thing to wash. If you don’t have space for a change table a cot top changer is good. Just keep Pooh bags Stored away from the cot liked to change standing up. I still change my two year old on the cot top changer a lot especially in the morning when my back is still waking up.
But honestly those baskets look like a hygeine nightmare.
