Hiya,
I'm 22 weeks pregnant and I'm having problems getting to sleep at night as I just can't get comfy. I also can't seem to get my brain to relax at all - does anyone have any tips as I'm quite tired of hardly sleeping then waking early.

sometimes i find it's better to get up and have a little walk round and a drink if i'm lying there for ages without any success.

try a few diff pillow formations aswell- sometimes it's trial and error, and then you crack it...until you roll off them when you do go to sleep, and have to start again

Ah the joys of pregnancy...
Unfortunately its quite common to struggle with sleeping I think. I put a feather pillow betweeen my thighs and then lay on my side so my bump is on top of the edge of the pillow too (if that makes sense). Makes sleeping a lot more comfortable for me and I wake less.
As for problems relaxing your brain I think things like a nice warm bubble bath, horlicks or other warm drink and not doing anything too stimulating before bed help (I don't have a problem getting to sleep - staying awake is mine!). Do you get chance to nap in the daytime at all?

Lucyand2 · 04/10/2007 09:28

I sometimes get to nap, depends on DD1 though as she doesn't seem to like it! I sleep with a little pillow between my knees but my shoulders hurt when I lie on them.

I might have to experiment with my pillows until I find a comfy position. The only problem is that I change position lots in the night even when I'm asleep.

I'm having the same problem, not found a solution yet.

I get off to sleep okay, but once I wake up in the night I find it near enough impossible to get back to sleep.

Jbck · 04/10/2007 16:16

I'm not uncomfy, I'm not worrying about anything I just can't sleep after about 2:30am.
I was up last night having hot chocolate & a wagon wheel, night before it was angel delight. I'm not hungry when I go to bed but wake up ravenous & it doesn't matter if I eat then or not I still struggle to get back off before about 5.
Still, I'm nearly 35 weeks, stop work next week so I'll nap daytimes & then it'll be disturbed nights for another reason soon after.
Totally sympathise with everyone.

It might be worth snacking on things that are less sugary. Apparently food with high levels of sugar make your blood glucose levels go mad (or something like that) and this can disturb your sleep patterns. Try nibbling on things with a low GI instead - nuts or seedy bread would be good and would seriously stop you from getting hungry.

Hope that helps.

Sx

I reccommend you do not give in to the night time hunger. If you ignore it you will go back to sleep.

try not to eat your dinner too late - nothing after 7/7.30 and keep your liquid consumption non-sugar and non-caffiene. you're better off with water and herbal teas than chocolate drinks as they're just stimulants.

tyaca · 04/10/2007 21:15

hey jbak, in my late teens, i used to crave sugar really bad in the early stages of sleep. would practucally sleep walk to kitchen...

saw a telly prog couple of years ago, and its not uncommon, and is a recognised medical thing

Lucyand2 · 05/10/2007 08:37

Another thing waking me up at the moment is my dry throat. It drives me mad but as far as I know this is quite common so I'm just going to have to deal with it. Meh.
