Abdominal Circumference measurement 20 weeks

I'm 23 weeks and have been dwelling on my 20 week scan notes for a while so thought it was best to (try) and put my mind at ease.

His tummy was measuring 172.6mm. Sad

I have booked in for a gestational diabetes test as per the sonographers advice. I'm not overweight, I don't have a family history of diabetes, I barely even have a bump! Its my first pregnancy and I'm just googling and googling and getting more and more worried that I'm going to give birth to a 10lb+ baby Blush

My GD test isn't for a few weeks yet, did anyone else have a measurement over 170 and go on to have a healthy baby?

Thanks in advance x

Also, if your baby was measuring bigger, did you end up being induced/going into labour earlier?

Hi, I'm interested to know peoples experience of this too. At my 20 week scan his abdominal was measuring 161.70, very high compared to the rest of him. Nothing was mentioned to me about it but I'm going to ask at my 25 week appointment. I'm worried about having a big baby but everyone reassured me these measurements aren't always exact and it could be due to water or positioning

Even if you do have GD (you don’t have to be overweight to get it, it’s not a judgement on you or your lifestyle or health - 40-60% of women with GD have no demonstrable risk factor) then it doesn’t follow that you’ll have a big or unhealthy baby. Uncontrolled diabetes is what causes that risk, if it’s diagnosed and controlled then the baby is no more likely to be large than any other baby.

I did have GD and therefore quite a lot of scans, and all the measurements seemed to be all over the place so I do wonder how accurate they actually are. Sometimes it would be showing high for abdominal measurements, sometimes really high for femur length instead and normal for the rest.

@bubbles519 it's so frustrating isn't it, I just keep thinking and googling Blush let me know how you get on x

@BikeTyson thank you that's really helpful, I know it can depend on what you've eaten before your scan etc too, 172.6 just seemed crazily high compared to a lot of the forums I've seen with AC so just started worrying!

Will let you know what my GD test comes back as x

Anyone else? X

I can’t recall the exact measurements but my baby’s AC was above the 95th percentile and I had multiple scans towards my due date and occasionally it measured off the scale percentile wise, but it was always tracking along the same trajectory.
I was tested for GD But didn’t have it.

I had a growth scan at 39+2 and she was estimated at 9lbs 9oz, I went into labour that afternoon, had her the next morning, vaginal delivery with no instruments needed, she weighed 9lb 1oz
My midwife said you always grown a baby that is the right size for you so please don’t worry ❤️

@Gigitree thank you so much for your lovely message that's really helpful & reassuring, a lovely sentiment to remember too! Thank you 🥰

I'd take the measurements with a pinch of salt. I'm not sure what my measurements were but baby was measuring over 5 weeks ahead on scans- consistently. The estimated weight at 32 weeks as 6lb 5. He was born 37 weeks by C section mainly because of risk of large for gestational age combined with my age. He was born 6lb 15, 57th percentile.

My DS AC was 163 at 20 weeks and I can assure you it doesn't really mean anything this early as he like my other children were small for gestational age, he came 11 days overdue weighing only 6lb15oz and on the 3rd centile my current pregnancy is the same, he has a similar AC as my other DS but a week ahead in his femur length, no doubt I'll be having a long but small weight baby again. There's still plenty of time for things to be picked up regarding baby's growth x

Hi op,

I wasn't diagnosed with gestational diabetes until 5 days after my DS was born. I was really poorly and showing all the signs from 30 weeks but the correct tests etc weren't done until too late.

My ds was measuring huge, off the scale on all growth scans from 30 weeks. Abdominal measuring huge. I was a size 8 pre pregnancy and a size 10 now 5 weeks after so wasn't over weight and ate healthily all through pregnancy and exercised loads.

I ended up having a c section at 37 weeks due to his growth dipping and him being breech. He weighed 7 lbs 1 and was absolutely tiny (due to being 3 weeks early). Obviously if he'd stayed in until 40 he'd of been bigger but i was expecting a huge chunk of a child and I had a tiny tiny baby. He's now weighing nearly 11 pounds already tho at 5 weeks 4 days.

Don't worry op! xxx
