Gestational diabetes at 17 weeks

I had my glucose tolerance test yesterday and has come back today that I have gestational diabetes. I was tested earlier due to having it in my last pregnancy so I'm currently only 17+3. Has anyone else failed this early on?? Google is not helping either as it's making me worry a lot more.

Hi, I'm not sure I can answer your question, but I just wondered... Does it actually go after pregnancy? I didn't have it with my first, but I'm worried about it now I'm pregnant again

I’ve not got any first hand experience but try not to think of it as failing the test, you haven’t failed anything. You did the right thing by having the test and now you know about the diabetes you’ll be able to take steps to reduce the impact on your baby. It’s pretty common to be diagnosed at this point in a second pregnancy so I’m sure people with experience will be along soon!

That is very early OP! Try not to worry too much, there is a really good Gestational Diabetes group on Facebook which has excellent information around managing it.

@mollysmommy gestational diabetes usually goes soon after the birth. It's related to the placenta so once that's gone, so is the diabetes.

@mollysmommy as soon as the placenta is out it goes away. You have to be tested once every year just to make sure you don't develop type 2 diabetes xx

@Pinktruffle I rejoined it last night as I thought I would fail it. My eldest 2 I never had it with (8 and 3 years) but have with my youngest (2years) and now. I was tested because I had it last time. What's worrying me more is I was told it was very unlikely I would ever carry a girl and now I am and I really want a healthy pregnancy x

Hello yes I did with my second. I failed the test at 16 weeks and put on the tablets and daily injections by 17 weeks. I was tested early as I had it with my son by 29 weeks. It was fine both times and the diabetes was gone as soon as I had them. Try not to worry.

@Hublott we're you induced due to it? I was induced with my youngest but not sure if they would do it again xx

@kim160790 yes I got diagnosed around the same time as you, I ended up on insulin X4 a day, my pregnancy was ok, I got induced at 38 weeks x

@lockdownmumma123 with my youngest I wasn't tested until after 30 weeks so it all happened really quickly with the tablets and insulin within weeks!. When did they put you on tablets and insulin was it soon after or did they give it time? X

@kim160790 when I got diagnosed I was told to eat normally and note my sugars and a plan would be put in place the following week, my numbers weren't great so got put on metformin, I had bad side effects from metformin basically couldn't leave the toilet lol, I was put on insulin 3 days later, it all happened to fast for me as well! It was my first baby so when it happened I was like woahhhh what is going on!! I think it's a good thing they have picked it up early though at least you'll get the support you need xx

You haven't "failed" the test! The rate of recurrence if you have GDM in a previous pregnancy is about 80% I think. In the trust where I work if you had GDM previously you are automatically referred to the Diabetes team at booking and asked to start monitoring your blood sugars straight away.

I was diagnosed at 16 weeks with my little girl. First pregnancy, but I was tested early as I had pre diabetes before getting pregnant. She's only 4 weeks old now, so I've not yet had my post baby check to make sure it's gone away and i don't have type 2 diabetes

I had a check up after my youngest and was all clear hoping that will be the same after this baby is born. Honestly thought I would pass the 16 week one and then be diagnosed at the 28 week point then go through the process. I'm happy they've picked it up but I've still got so many months to go of worrying whereas last time it was only 6-7 weeks xx

You haven't "failed" the test and theres nothing you could of done to avoid it!
I was diagnosed at 18 weeks in this pregnancy, I was on insulin injections within 2 weeks but I'm now well controlled better than it was in my last pregnancy when I was diagnosed at 30 weeks. So if anything g the early diagnoses was probably better. Whether its correct I don't know but my diabetes team say that the effects of badly controlled gestational diabetes don't normally begin to show until the 3rd trimester so being well controlled by that point has helped.
I thought it would feel like a really long pregnancy having been diagnosed so early but it's all just normal life now.
Definitely recommend the Facebook page that someone else has too and the diabetes UK website is also helpful.
