Iron tablets

28 weeks pregnant and been prescribed iron tablets, been taking them the last few days but I literally can't keep them down, they come straight back up within about half hour 🙄 I don't know weather to take another after of just leave it! Think I'll have to phone the midwife if this keeps happening as surely they're not getting into my system!

Are you taking them with food? What type are you taking?

Bellsx · 12/08/2020 13:51

I'm having to take iron tablets too (200mg ferrous fumarate) and I was told by my midwife to take them first thing in the morning before food with a glass of orange juice and I've had no problems.

I couldn't tolerate iron tablets either. I take two sachets of spatone a day instead, with orange juice. Obviously not as strong as the tablets, but way way better than nothing! And it doesn't affect my stomach at all ☺️

I would also recommend Spatone water sachets - I have the apple-flavoured ones after low-haemoglobin levels at my 28-week bloods. Take some getting used to, but definitely more palatable than the tablets! I bought mine in Tesco but you can get them in most places and don't need a prescription.

Do you know what your blood results were? If it’s just that your ferritin is a bit low, or your haemoglobin is slightly low, then spatone or another form of liquid iron might help. But if you have really low iron or stores, they may consider an iron infusion if you can’t tolerate oral iron.

I take mine with orange juice and they are staying down. Feel so much better for a week of taking them (although the massive black poos are less than pleasant Confused)

Yes I also take spatone iron liquid ratchets as couldn't stomach the tablets. As PP said, check if it's your iron stores that are low and ask for a transfusion if so.

Thanks everyone for your replies! I phoned midwife and she said to try take them first thing in the morning with a fruit juice :)

Agree with others to try spatone sachets. I had lovely constipation and black poo. Most unpleasant.

Strawberries4days · 12/08/2020 17:10

Yeah I'm on the same pills as you and taking them with orange juice does help. Honestly, the toilet thing gave me a fright because no-one told me😂 quick ring to the GP for them to go "Yep, that happens!"

ablisha · 12/08/2020 23:21

I've chosen spatone instead too, midwife said that's fine
