Late August Baby

Keep getting lots of comments from people asking if I'm hoping for a late August (due date 25th) or early September baby.

How does it affect Nursery/ schools? I know that August babies are youngest in the year and September oldest!

FTM so likely to be overdue!

I'm due Aug 31st so I'd be interested to know this too!

August baby would start school at 4 and a few days, Sep baby starts a few days before they are 5.
Sep baby has an extra nursery year (if they go)
You can defer your aug baby till the following school year if you think they would benefit.

I am an August 26th baby and it has done me no harm - infact, probably helped me, but I was “ready”. Nowadays, option to delay start until the next year in many areas, and decision doesn’t need to be made until nearer the time.

Baby due 25th August (IVF, unlike half of my friends who “planned” an Autumn baby, we are just delighted to be having one!)

Teacher here. As PPs said, an August baby will start school nearly a year earlier than a September baby. Great if your child is ready to go to school when they are just 4. Not so great if they aren’t ready.

Having a September baby (I am if I’m not early) means your child will be the oldest in the year. Downside of that is that they can be ready to go to school a lot earlier than they are able to.

I started my TTC journey in December 2018 which would have given me a September 2020 baby. After a year TTC, any month would have been perfect for us too. I just so happened to get my BFP in December 2019. As a teacher, that worked out well for me but I just desperately wanted my baby.

I work in a nursery, I look after a little girl whose birthday is 31st august, been at nursery almost full time since 10 months. She is SO clever and confident and will excel in school, even though she will be the youngest. I have also seen older children September / October, still struggle despite the extra time they’ve had at nursery. A little girl I remember, her birthday was 1st September so had an extra year in preschool but only did 1 day... she wasn’t very confident socially. It really depends. Every child is different. Nursery really does help in confidence for school though. X

August babies though, with nursery funding - will get their funding in September. September babies have to wait until the next term (I think January) x
