6 weeks - brown blood but positive test

I think I've read every single message on mumsnet since I found brown blood on saturday, but still need reassurance ! I read a post saying preg hormones would only show up if fetus still 'alive' so did preg test and it's positive. Could that happen if i've had a missed miscarriage ? Feeling nauseous and completely without energy, but not sure how much of that is just worrying about not knowing what's going on. Still some brown blood / discharge but not much and no cramping. Will try to see doc this afternoon but if anyone has any words of wisdom while I'm waiting, they would be much appreciated !

Try not to worry. Get to the docs as soon as you can though.

Do you have a day assessment unit near you? They might be able to offer more reassurance...

Good luck, hope everything goes OK.

Hi there
When I was pregnant with DD I had a huge blood loss, right before we flew to SA. Thought I had a miscarriage. went to doc in SA. he did a scan. There was alot of blood around baby. a few days after I had brown blood for about 2 weeks. Doc told me that would happen. just the old blood coming down. Just keep youself still. don't do anything heavy.
holding thumbs for you, and go and see the doc. let him send you for a scan to make sure.
let us know
good luck

brown blood likely to be old stuff that the womb is getting rid of in order to give your baby a nice home for the next nine months.

Go to doc just in case, but in a nutshell: brown blood ok, red blood - worry.

good luck

Aah - thank you. That made me cry ! (great - oversensitive, must be still pregnant !) I have completely wasted 2 days so far not knowing what to do with myself because of wondering about this pregnancy Can't bear to wait until 12 week scan to find out though. Just got to wait until 1.30 until surgery reopens so I can try for an afternoon appointment. Fingers crossed.

Had brown discharge at 6 weeks. Brown is fine - red still might be fine, but brown is OLD blood - could be implantation bleeding.

I had a miscarriage last year and the tests I did when it had happpened, before I started bleeding, were getting fainter and fainter.

HTH x good luck x

I had a haematoma that caused bleeding between 7 and 12 weeks, it's one of those things that resolves itself in most cases and I bled loads, brown and red blood with cramping and pregnancy has continued as normal. It's apparently very common and I think most people come out the other side ok!

Lots of very positive stories here on MN about people in this situation so keep your chin up and try and get to your local early pregnancy unit. Be aware though that it's very difficult to see at 6 weeks, my sonographer struggled at 7 weeks to tell me much more than it's there, heartbeat first heard at 8 week scan - I think!

Good luck and stay positive

HumptyDumptyWasPushed · 02/10/2007 12:53

Good luck to you tomps. I think 40% of people bleed in the first 12 weeks so nearly half. That put it into perspective for me. It is usually nothing but definitely get it checked out. It is not normal but by no means unusual.

I had a bad bleed and cramps at 7 weeks and assumed the worst- had already suffered a miscarriage 3 months previously- but had a scan and saw a very healthy baby, now 5 months old and grinning up at me.

Please let us know.

Just to explain too, a +hpt just means that you do have hcg in your system, it does not confirm whether you have a live or even healthy pregnancy in the right location.

HumptyDumptyWasPushed · 02/10/2007 12:55

I was very lucky to see a heartbeat at a 7 week scan but yes bear in mind that if they do scan you, they may not be able to see very much and you may have to go back in a couple of weeks.

funnypeculiar · 02/10/2007 12:56

Another one who had lots of bleeding - esp with ds (my first) but in both pgs, and came through fine with two healthy babies. Apparently it's really, really common, as the cervix has increased bloodful, so bruises/bleeds easily.

In case it happens again, get your GP to tell you details of the Early Pregnancy Unit - you can usually self refer - ie just turn up & they'll do a scan & see what they can see (mine did suggest that I was probably going to be OK after my third early scan ) They are usually really helpful.
Although be warned they may use a trasvaginal scan rather than on your tummy one (more accurate) - not painful, but a bit of a surprise if you're not expecting it!!

Piffle · 02/10/2007 12:58

be aware of brown blood not meant to scare you but I had this at 5 wks and it ended up being a ruptured ectopic.
So if you get any severe one sided pain, shoulder tip pain treat it as an emergency.
Good luck hopefully everything will be alright for you

I would go to your local early pregnancy unit and get checked out - mine allows you to walk in and self-refer yourself. I am also 6 weeks and had bleeding on Friday last week. Went in and they scanned me, all fine and they could already see a faint heartbeat at 6 weeks + 1 day. I have been pregnant before, I have a 18 month old, and I had bleeding at the same time with him. In the EPU they said it is always worth going and getting checked out for ANY type of bleeding you have. Mine last pregnancy was implantation bleeding. This pregnancy they said they couldn't see a reason, you just sometimes get a bit of blood working its way out. Anyway, good luck and try to relax a little!

yaddayah · 02/10/2007 14:29

I had what I thought was a very heavy start to af at 5 weeks so thought I wasn't pg (hadn't tested) 3 days of af then it stopped .. found out the next month I was 9 weeks pg (all fine! .. dd now 3)

Good luck !

Had a similar situation not so long ago!

Was told by Gyno that brown blood is old blood and therefore no need to panic - it turns out I had the reminants (however your spell it) of an old period - I had brown bleeding for about 3 days - had scan and everything ok abd fetus developing.

I'm sure all will be fine.

Hi everyone im new on here.im only 5 wks pregnant & ive just started bleedin.
Ive phoned up t hospital & i can't have a scan till mon thats when t early pregnancy unit opens.so ive got to go all weekend without knowin if ive lost it or not.

orangehead · 12/10/2007 17:45

I dont know about the test but I bleed when preg with both my boys, although the way through the preg sometimes it was brown sometimes red. This was espeacially worrying as I had previosly had 3 miscarriages. Thankfully they were both ok. Apparently alot of women bleed and have successful preg so it doesnt always mean the worst but at the same time as u probably aware it isnt something to ignore. I hope all goes well. Alot of hosps have early preg assessment units

orangehead · 12/10/2007 17:47

glad all went well (only just read yr recent post.
Oh cazzy - sorry. Is it alot or light? Thinking of u

IWantToBePositive · 12/10/2007 17:50

Brown blood is old blood so you should be fine.

Think positive.

cazzy20 · 12/10/2007 17:55

Well it was red before but its gone light now & ive got no pains so im just takin it easy.

orangehead · 12/10/2007 17:59

with my 2nd son I had heavy red bleeding and really thought I had lost, the bleeding lasted for 5 days and was more like a period but every was fine
