How to handle Glucose Tolerance Test

Hey,

I’m just back from a glucose tolerance test. Which if you’re reading this I’m sure you know the woes of.

I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how not to feel like total crap for the rest of the day? I need to get some work done!

Xxx

It's a bit like orange squash. I liked it!

I had horrific heart burn whilst I was sat there waiting but I just had something to eat and drink and then cracked on with my day at work

@Sairafina they'll probably carry on being a pain with various different things over the years, very wise to just not tell them, although I'm sure you'll be fine anyway. It's not directly linked to what you've eaten anyhow.

What does the drink actually taste like? That's the bit I'm most worried about! I've heard a lot of people gag on it??

I thought it tasted like a shot, I can't quite place what, maybe a sourz? I think as you have to fast for it it's more that it's quite strong for the first thing you have all day. I was really worried but found it fine, just get it down the hatch Grin. I also usually faint at blood tests but found both of them surprisingly okay.

I don’t remember it being that bad. The drink tasted like strong, cheap orange squash. I was hungry but I had popped a sandwich in my bag and ate it as soon as the test was over. I drove home and was fine. Got the results 4 or 5 days later. Positive unfortunately.

Doesn't sound too bad, how much do you have to drink?

TrashKitten10 · 04/08/2020 19:11

At my hospital it was just a small plastic cup full of sugary water, no flavour. Neither pleasant nor unpleasant really. My stomach rumbled a lot but I felt fine during and after it. They said they'd contact me if it was a positive result and they didn't. I tried to confirm it was negative with the midwife and consultant but neither seemed to know. So I assumed negative 🤷🏻‍♀️

To be honest, waiting around for 2 hours was the worst thing about it for me. Try not to think about it, it'll be fine.

mammagmac · 05/08/2020 08:49

So I had some porridge and sat on the sofa to do my work yesterday and was fine for the rest of the day! I’m exhausted today but probably more to do with it being really hot last night.

They do recommend you drink lots of water after as the glucose dehydrates you!

I think the best way to describe the drink is like a caprisun loaded with 10x the sugar! It’s not nice but it’s over quickly and I think you’re more likely to feel sick if you feel really crap on an empty tummy. Don’t forget a book for the waiting! I forgot but thankfully was sat by a window people watching and texting a few friends x

Mine was terrible - felt so ill and tired while processing the glucose drink (fine until that point!)
