Pregnancy of Unknown Location

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with PULs, in particular a gestational sac not appearing on an early scan. I thought I was 6 weeks and 6 days pregnant when I had a private viability scan on 2nd August after a week of very light 'spotting' (I'm not even sure I can call it spotting - it was just some dark watery blood when I wiped after the loo once or twice a day). They couldn't see any sign of a pregnancy and initially suggested a molar pregnancy which was pretty scary given the likelihood of putting off trying again for 6-12 months and the (albeit small) risk of cancer.
Fortunately when I went to the local NHS Early Pregnancy Unit this morning, they scanned me again and assured me that while they still couldn't see any sign of pregnancy, it's definitely not molar. But - they told me this is a Pregnancy of Unknown Location and that there were three possible outcomes:

  1. My dates are wrong and the pregnancy is too early to show yet. Best case scenario is that conception could have been 3 weeks and 3 days ago so I'm not sure if that would count as being too early to show. I had a negative pregnancy test 2 weeks and 4 days ago, then a faint positive 2 weeks ago (followed by more, stronger positives since)
  2. I've already had a miscarriage - but the spotting was so light I can't believe any tissue could have passed. I don't understand from articles I've read whether my body could have absorbed the fetus and the sac without anything passing out.
  3. An ectopic pregnancy - but I'm not feeling any pain at all.
I had my blood taken today and I have to go back in 48 hours to have it done again, to check my hormone levels and confirm next steps. Has anyone else had experience of this? I'm going crazy not knowing which of the three scenarios might apply to me!

Hello, I'm sorry you are going through this. Your HCG levels will hopefully give a better picture of what is going on.

When it happened to me, they thought they could potentially see something in one of my Fallopian tubes but it was so small they weren't sure. In the end, my HCG levels started to fall and I started bleeding.

From memory, they expect to be able to see something on a scan if your HCG level is over 2000. When do you get the result from your first blood test?

Hi @Teakind, I'm so sorry to hear that happened to you. It must have been tough.

If you don't mind me asking, did they see something in your Fallopian tube very early on in the pregnancy? And was it long after that when you started bleeding?

There just seem to be so many variables and so many different outcomes, and I hate this being in limbo

We had a pregnancy of unknown location, a week later a yolk, a week later a heart beat. Sadly it did end in MC at 12 weeks - but it did progress past this limbo stage. Good luck

@LittleBrownBaby that's such sad news, I'm so sorry. How many weeks do you think you were at the first suggestion of PUL?

I hope you're doing ok after the news and are managing to get lots of support

Hi OP, I was about 5 weeks when they realised my hcg wasn’t rising properly and started bleeding just before 6 weeks I think.

As I was so early, something would have been very small anyway.

How are you feeling? Will they call with your first hcg result today?

Morning @Teakind. What a traumatic experience for you. Was that recently? Have you TTC again since? I hope things work out for you

I'm feeling fine physically though thank you, I still have pregnancy symptoms like sore breasts and a tinny taste in my mouth, and haven't had any of the pain I would have expected with an ectopic or a miscarriage. But from what I've been reading over the last 24 hours, I guess there isn't always pain initially

LittleBrownBaby · 04/08/2020 18:09

@LondonLadySW thank you! It was really hard but I am now pregnant again and keeping everything crossed.

I thought I was around 6 weeks but my dates may have been wrong by a week. We then went back and there was a yolk sac, then a baby with a heartbeat.

I really hope you have a good result x
