Clothes size for newborn?

Hi everyone,

What sized clothes did you buy for newborn and how long did they fit in them after birth? Baby due in November.

So far we have:

15 bodysuits 0-3 months
2 sleepsuits first size
6 sleepsuits 0-3 months
2 knitted hats in newborn size

How many more newborn should I buy? FTM here and want to get organised. Was thinking 5 bodysuits, 5 sleepsuits. Don’t want to buy too many newborn size as I’ve read a lot of babies aren’t in that size for very long at all. Thank you. 😊

Totally depends on the baby. Dd was born at 40+ 5 and was in tiny baby for about 3 weeks. Then newborn for another 2-3. Finally in 0-3 at about 6 weeks.

Dh has to do a run to the shops for her clothes as we were not expecting tiny baby!! She was 3.15 kg at birth.

We had a couple of newborn things with DS1. They lasted a week. Then straight into 0-3 months.

I can't remember what all of the sizes were called now. One was up to 7lbs and that was newborn I think. Another was up to 10lbs and first size I think. With DS2 I got him a week's worth of baby grows and vests in the 10lbs size for the hospital bag. They probably lasted 3-4 weeks. Then again, we went onto 0-3.

I had two massive babies who grew like weeds. DS1 still does now. When they were babies, clothes sizes usually lasted about 8 weeks. I was lucky and DN was born close to DS1, so he had a lot of baby stuff passed down. I then obviously kept most of it for DS2. The time I needed most clothes was when they were weaning. Unless you have a particularly sicky baby, they don't need changed loads in the early days.

Mine was born at 39 weeks, average weight and wore exclusively newborn for the first 6 weeks-ish. I reckon we probably had about 10 newborn sleepsuits and couldn’t have made do with less because she’d often spit up after a feed. It’s also easy to get stuff online quickly if you need more of a particular size and you’ll probably get gifted things too.

Get a range of stuff in all the sizes! Nearly 6 month old DS has only just grown out of a 0-3 month babygro, and has never fitted a 3-6 month vest & trousers outfit that was bought for him as a newborn. Clothes sizing makes no sense. Some clothes do specify length in cm/ins which can be easier to gauge than age or weight.

TinySleepThief · 28/07/2020 15:06

Newborn and first size were essential. We had so much 0-3 stuff but ut drowned DS. He's still now able to fit into some 0-3 stuff and he's nearly 8 months old.

I agree with a PP that baby clothes seem to have no standard sizing and they can vary hugely depending on the brand.

I would also recommend getting quite a lot more baby grows etc.Depending on the type of baby you have you may go through way more than you anticipate. DS was prone to spitting up and being sick in one day when he was about a week old we got through 12 baby grows!!

We used Next and H&M 0-1month stuff for around a month then went up to 0-3m

DD was born on due date at 7.2lbs and did not fit tiny baby at all (we had 1 sleepsuit + 1 outfit for hospital bag just in case, but think they came from a car boot so no huge expense)

I would recommend at least 10 sleepsuits and 10 bodysuits in newborn - Like a PP said DD was in these until 6 weeks and we really couldn’t have made do with less due to spit up and nappy leakage!

I think we had about 15 sleepsuits in 0-3 but brands like next especially come up very long so not all began to fit at 6 weeks, just like some lasted far beyond 3 months.

Stargazer87 · 28/07/2020 15:31

Also wondering about sizes...just looking at Next and new baby is 7lbs8 and up to 1 month is up to 10lbs? What would you go for to take to hospital??

Kodiak83 · 28/07/2020 15:39

I had big babies 8 lb9 and 9lb 12. With both they definitely needed newborn and up to 1 month initially, otherwise they were swamped. This is next sizing for the most part as I really rate their sleepsuits. From about 1 month they needed 0-3. My babies were quite a lot bigger than most friends so I’d say get some newborn so they look cute in first pics and aren’t swamped

Caspianberg · 28/07/2020 17:01

8lb 8 here. Newborn size lasted 3 days, 1 month about 2 weeks. Then in 0-3. realistically he could have just gone straight into 0-3 have we not bought the other bits (only have a pack of each luckily).

Now he is not quite 3 months old, and is in a mixture of 3-6 and 6-9 months depending on brands.

Stargazer87 · 28/07/2020 17:09

Do you think maybe up to 1 month would be ok or might it still be massively too big? Don't want to buy new born and risk it not fitting?

biscuit13 · 28/07/2020 17:17

Im another FTM here due in november, also lost with clothing. 🙈 I have a few newborn, and then starting to get some 0-3.
My question is, will I need up to 1 month as well? Or can they go from newborn into 0-3 without it being massive?

peachypetite · 28/07/2020 17:24

I think it’s better for them to be a bit big, doesn’t matter surely.

biscuit13 · 28/07/2020 17:47

@peachypetite OK thanks, I literally have no idea how it will fit baby, or how different weight babies fit into what sizes. I dont know how quickly baby will grow out of newborn. I just looked at some 0-3 in the shops and thought it looks quite big for a new baby!

peachypetite · 28/07/2020 18:53

M&S newborn only goes up to 7lbs which doesn’t seem big enough!!!

alphabetti · 28/07/2020 21:33

Baby clothing sizing seems to have changed since I had my 2 who are now 16 and 14yrs. I remember newborn used to be up to 9lbs. My DS was born 7lb4oz and wore newborn fir about a month and my DD was born 7lb0oz however didn’t put much weight on fir first couple weeks so she wore newborn fir about 6weeks.

I’m now 21weeks and newborn seems to be 7lb8oz and then up to 1mth 10lbs. I don’t want to spend money on newborn if won’t get much use from it but up to 1 month seems too big for a newborn! I might just but first size and then send my mum to buy newborn if she’s born small?....

Musicalmistress · 28/07/2020 21:46

I bought newborn/first size to take to the hospital when I had youngest DD - she was so tiny that OH was despatched shortly after birth to buy premie baby outfits (she wasn't prem just little). Her newborn stuff fitted for months!

Caspianberg · 29/07/2020 18:03

@peachypetite @biscuit13 - we bought m and s also. baby was 8lb8, and I thought the 0-3 month looked huge so panic bought a few newborn and 1month size, but it really wasnt. I would say skip the newborn size, and just get one pack on m and s 1 month if you want slightly smaller for a few weeks, but not urgent

NutterPotter · 29/07/2020 18:07

I spent a fortune on cute little newborn and first size sleepsuit and bodysuits only for him to come out at over 9lbs and not fit most of them. Would agree with previous posters stick to 1st size or 0-3 as those we had the most wear out of.

Username6345789 · 29/07/2020 18:09

It really varies where you shop I found the sizes weren’t standard across the board. I mostly used sainsburys and next and got the upto 1 month and 0-3month as I knew baby wasn’t going to be tiny from growth scans! I would say have 10 baby grows and 15 vests in each size as you will be looking at around 3 changes per day of spitting up etc and sometimes you can save a baby grow by changing the vest!
