Are growth scans accurate?

I had a growth scan today as my midwife said yesterday on my routine midwife appt that the baby's weight had not increased since the last appt.

The sonographer today said baby looks all good which is amazing news 🙏🏻🙏🏻 however he did say rush baby was 7.3lbs ( I am 36+3 days) & that by my due date Baby will be approx 9lbs.

Just wanted to know if this is relatable information really from other ladies experiences with previous growth scans & births ?

My experience no!
My baby was born on the 8th centile due to restrictions in growth that were never picked up! Baby was online to be on 50th centile according to scans!

Sister was the same as @lastbany pp. Tiny babies for both pregnancies that weren’t picked up by the scans as abnormal (she delivered at 42 weeks both times and had 5-6lb babies!)

All that matters is your happy, rested and healthy. I’d ignore the scans unless there is something wrong.

Wishing you all the best x

My son measured very good throughout pregnancy so I had additional scans to monitor his growth. He was born at 39+6 weighing 10lb10 and was in size 6 months clothes within a fortnight. So it was accurate in this case.

*good = he measured very big

Footlooseandfancy · 24/07/2020 20:34

Mine was exactly right!

My baby was small, picked up by growth scans. I was induced at 37 weeks because of this. But they said she would weigh 5lb 7, when she was born 2 days later she weighed 5lb 15.

Not really in my experience.
I was on hospital bed rest at 32 weeks due to severe SPD then reduced movements so was on constant monitoring. At 36 weeks they gave me the steroid injections in my thighs my god do they hurt and gave me a growth scan they said he would be over 7lb so more than happy to start inducing me.
He was 5lb4 born. Very healthy and happy xx

I had a midwife appt and a growth scan 2 days apart, one measured baby around the 30th centile and the other around the 80th.

Unless you are getting consistently big or small measurements over weeks (or even months) then I would take it with a pinch of salt.

Thank you ladies, The sonographer said all looks healthy which is so lovely & reassuring to hear. Just the way he pulled a face saying that baby will be big.
Either way, as long as baby is healthy that's all that matters 🙏🏻

Mine weren’t very accurate. I had scans each time the day before I ended up giving birth naturally. DC1 was 7lb 3oz according to scan and was born 6 lb 9oz the next day. DC2 predicted 8lb 3oz and born 4 hours later at 7lb 9oz. Not hugely inaccurate but also quite a big difference!

Needmoremummyjuice · 24/07/2020 20:46

Growth scan a couple of days before delivery estimated 6lb, delivered a couple of days later 7lb 8!

FingersXssd83 · 24/07/2020 20:47

I was bang on average on the normal tape measure method. Then had a scare and was scanned at 33 weeks and baby was measuring 5.5lb (95th percentile). Midwife said she doesn't think our baby is huge and would expect an average weight, and that the scans can be very out as they measure leg length and me and DH are tall so it may be a long baby. We are 35 weeks on Monday so time will tell...

GiraffeHat · 24/07/2020 20:57

Mine was totally out. Baby predicted to be 8lbs-ish, was 9lbs 11oz at birth. I won't go into the labour and delivery but suffice it to say I've been left with post traumatic stress!

newmum1312 · 24/07/2020 21:01

Nope. My baby was estimated at over 9lbs at 38 weeks so they induced me. She was born 8lb 3oz so I didn't even need to be induced.

I’m not sure growth scans are a real estimate of baby’s weight. With my oldest they thought I was measuring small so gave me a growth scan. They estimated he might be 51/2lbs but said no concern as I’m small built myself. He was born at 39+4 weighing 7lb 4oz! His dad is 6ft though.
