When to buy the cot

Hello,

Just wondering when people bought their cot or are planning to buy this? I'm currently 24 weeks and I'm not sure if it's too soon to buy this yet.

Thanks :)

It was around that time for me too! And we assembled it right away. It's really individual, some people don't want to have any baby equipment until the date is very near. Some feel like buying things early is bad luck.

My MIL bought us a Moses basket when I was 15 weeks and cautiously asked me if I want her to store it if I feel uncomfortable having it in our house so early. I took it. Then I found a great deal for a barely used second hand pram/travel system and it was too good to miss - even though it felt a wee bit awkward because I was only 17 weeks at that time.

But in retrospective, now I'm glad we prepared everything well in advance. Now at 35 weeks I'm far too big, too tired and too uncomfortable to do anything! And I don't want to end up like my brother in law... They left everything for the last second and were rushing to assemble their car seat when the contractions started, lol!

Once I passed the 20 week scan mark, i felt more confident buying things so I've steadily been getting bits every week for the last 4 months.
I'm 37 weeks now and we've only just put the crib together although we've had it ages. I've just washed all the bedding this week too.

Will baby be sleeping in it from birth?
If not you can leave it till after baby is here.
I'd say by 35 weeks at the latest if needed from birth.

I've ordered ours as it came with the nursery furniture, I'm currently 24 weeks but it actually won't come until around 31 weeks which I thought seemed reasonable!

Prettylittlelady · 22/07/2020 22:36

I’m 28 weeks and I ordered nursery furniture last week. There’s a fairly long wait time so it’ll be here when I’m 32 weeks which I was happy with.

FudgeFlies · 23/07/2020 08:16

I’m 25 weeks and we ordered ours yesterday. Probably won’t put it up until closer to the time though. I’m worried that if we wait to order things until nearer the time and we’ll get second wave of covid, it may make things difficult to order/delay delivery times. (I’m a worrier)

Most people I know wait for the 20 week scan before the bigger purchases

When our DD was 4 months old! I bought a Next to Me around 34ish weeks and our friends gave us a Moses basket (we bought a new mattress)

MrsN2121 · 23/07/2020 08:40

We won't be buying a cot until baby is 5 months old ready to sleep in there own room from 6 months. Will just be sat there gathering dust otherwise.

I am 20 weeks and have my scan on Friday. Partner is teacher so off for summer now. We going to find out the sex at scan if can and then he will start to decorate the spare room and then we will order some furniture and cot that matches so probably when around 22/24weeks. I feel it is slightly early but time does fly once you reach 30 weeks and more practical for us he sorts baby’s room in school holidays.

Yerroblemom1923 · 23/07/2020 09:32

We waited until after the 20 WK scan and tests. Although my dd slept in a Moses basket with us for the first few months then moved the cot into our bedroom until the 6month mark when they're allowed to sleep in their own room.
So if you're getting a Moses basket (which are handy as more portable and baby can sleep downstairs during the day etc) there's no rush to buy a cot tbh.

Whatever you do , don’t wait until you are in labour 🤣

Baby came at 37 weeks and when I was in early labour my husband was rushing off to John Lewis to pick up a bed side cot.

On the plus side , at least I had my hospital bag packed !

Cherrytangfastic · 24/07/2020 11:59

As early as you want. We had most bits by 25-30 weeks which felt early, but I'm so glad we did now.

Just get everything ready while you still have the energy.

Baby is almost due now and I barely have the energy to get up and pee, so do it while you still can!

NameChange30 · 24/07/2020 12:19

You could look out for offers and sales, August bank holiday weekend maybe.

For DC1, we bought most of the big items on Black Friday weekend (end of November) when I was 6 months pregnant, but that won't be any use to you as you're due before then!
