Any experience with painful false labor?

Posting as the future daddy.

The thing is we already went for a check-up at the hospital yesterday because my wife is 2 days overdue and she's been consistently feeling pains in the groin area, along with her tummy tightening, as with contractions. Anyway the CTG clearly showed it's not the real thing, plus the "pangs" come irregularly, so we've been told to go home, it's false labor, the body is getting ready, deal with it.

Here we are almost 24 hours later and the pain never really subdued. It comes at "steady" 6-10 minutes intervals, 10-20 seconds of sharp pain, never more though, but it already made my wife basically skip the whole of last night's sleep. This has been going on more or less since last Friday, so.. 1 day and 17 hours now. I don't know how much more of this she can take at this rate, especially if the real thing should start anytime soon. I've already tried to book us for another check up but instead they keep suggesting the textbook remedies - warm bath, walking around, back massages, warm.bottles, paracetamol, none of which proved really helpful. She has a really low pain threshold unfortunately.

So my questions - how many of you had to deal with this and how long did this phase last? Our pregnancy book and classes never mentioned this damned scenario. Sorry for the long rant.

Braxton Hicks?
I had them quite intense the day before labour and if I walked a distance beforehand.
I remember it would stop me in my tracks, I really intense tightening.
Sleep and rest as your wife can it is so uncomfortable in the last month.

If they're regular it sounds like it's now true labour, however it can go on for days, so there's nothing out of the ordinary happening...

Can't offer much more based on my experiences I'm afraid, as my due date is today, but I've been having irregular pains for the past two weeks. Not necessarily expecting it to turn into anything any time soon! If she can take painkillers and try to rest as much as possible that'll be the best prep for when labour does kick in.
