Membrane sweep offered at 39 weeks

Hi everyone,

I'm currently 38 weeks pregnant, first time mom, and my midwife offered me a membrane sweep at 39 weeks.

I'm not sure whether I should do it, does anyone have some experience with sweeps?

I read that they can hurt a lot and give you days of unproductive labour.

Thanks for your advice xx

Had 2 sweeps with each of mine. First at 38 weeks. It didn't hurt during but some mild cramping after. Second sweep successful on both. I was very pleased I had them! Why are you having it early though? Best to wait until 40 if nothing wrong

@Morechocmorechoc: I am not sure, she didn't give a reason. She just said I could have a sweep at 39 weeks.

I would decline until 40 weeks. Baby is bigger and more developed. There is no need for you to have it early by the sounds of it. Get her to book you in for 40 weeks. My first one was done early as I had medical issues but meant baby smaller needed more feeding to catch up etc.

I had 3 at 39, 39+2 and 39+4, only minor cramping after each of the first 2. Labour started after the third one and my DD arrived 24 hrs later at 39+5 weighing a healthy 7lb 9 😀
