High HCG levels at 11 weeks; results clear - reasons?

Hi all,

I wonder if you have any experience of high HCG in pregnancy where all other variables are considered low risk?

I've received these stats on an 11 week nuchal screening:

Free beta hCG: 187.000 IU/l equiv. to 4.5301 MoM.
PAPP-A: 3.540 IU/l equiv. to 1.4455 MoM.
Estimated Risk for Aneuploidies:
Trisomy 21 Trisomy 13/18
Background risk: 1: 101; 1: 841
Adjusted risk: 1: 374; 1: 12011

In addition to this I had a 1/10,000 Harmony result for all.

I have just turned 40 so was concerned and am incredibly grateful for these results; but the HCG jumps out to me. From lurking on this board I know this is considered very high - but I can't find much online that explains if this alone is a marker for something?

Also - wanted to shout out to all the Coronavirus-times mums-to-be. What a time to be pregnant! For us, it felt like my age gave us no choice and we were quite gob-smacked when I fell pregnant!

Much love

Mimi

Looks about average to me?

Hi, hope you don't mind me asking - several months late here but I am in a similar situation.
How are things going with you?

My beta Hcg came back as high - 4.16Mom. The midwives have been super unhelpful and said its probably just normal but I am pretty worried as 4 times higher than normal seems v high!!

Hi Lottie,

I'm now 23.3 and so have had a successful anomally scan where the doctor said that it all looks as good as can be. I asked my doctor who asked a specialist and they said:

'It's likely that she is absolutely fine. All the trisomies are associated with a low PAPP-A level. Plus she's had a normal NIPT (Harmony). Plus a normal scan.
So the risk of chromosomal abnormality is very very low.'

I don't think about it so much now - my morning sickness completely stopped around 14 weeks and I'm back to feeling normal, so I can assume the high HCG didn't last. Perhaps high HCG in itself isn't an issue - in some cases is a marker, but for many people isn't and is just higher hormone levels!

Of course we won't fully know all is well until later, but I hope this puts your mind at rest. Perhaps we can't find the answers because there isn't an answer!

You've probably read this thread too:

I eat very little meat but I'm not sure how much I believe that vegetarians have higher HCG. I didn't have a bleed at any point, so that certainly isn't a factor. We are having a girl, but so do a lot of people who don't have such high HCG!

Good luck and I'm sure all will be fine. Wishing you the best with your pregnancy xx

Heya, thank you so much for your reply and I am so pleased for you that all is progressing so nicely!

Interesting the link between vegetarians and high Hcg - my diet is rather the opposite (I'm a farmer who probably eats far too much meat). and same as you no bleeding at all to date, or any form of sickness!!

It does look like I am having a girl too judging by the high hcg link and girls!
Fingers crossed all will be ok.

Wishing you the very best going forwards x
