Can they really tell the gender at 14 weeks?

Hello,

A girl I know on Facebook had a private gender scan at 14 weeks and I'm considering booking in but will they be able to tell or is it too soon?

Thanks

@Wecandothis99
The harmony test (and other NIPT) isn’t 100% accurate at determining the sex of the baby. It’s almost 100%, but isn’t 100% accurate.

It’s more accurate for male babies than female and is pretty much 100% accurate if it says the baby is male. It looks for Y chromosome in the fetal DNA so if this is found the baby is male. If Y chromosome is not found the test result says the fetus is female which is usually correct, but it might just be that they didn’t get enough fetal DNA to find the Y chromosome (rather than there not being a Y chromosome in the fetal DNA).

Bruce Jenner aka Caitlyn didn’t know his ‘gender’ until well into his 60s

Miljea · 13/07/2020 23:12

It's sex, not gender. It really is, especially in these 'woke' times...

We shy away from the term 'sex'. But that's the reality.

An aside, 20-25 years ago, at the dawn of the internet as we knew it, my DH worked in an Australian government institute, in pest control (in horticulture and agriculture). The number of important international texts hidden from them because they spoke of the sex of the parasite, along with learned articles from the Universities of Essex and Sussex... 🙄😂

@Kelcat9494 if you read my post, that's what I said??? I posted that this isn't about sex Vs gender because people were trying to make it political and that's not why you posted.

Sorry, I was meant to quote that one to piggy back off of to say I'm not looking to make it political.

@JaJaDingDong

I would have enjoyed seeing our baby again at 14 weeks but i would have taken any prediction on sex with a pinch of salt. They have a 50/50 chance of getting it right at that gestation.

They have a 50/50 chance of getting it right before it's even conceived. Last time I checked there were only two options available.

Exactly my point lol
indemMUND · 13/07/2020 23:32

16 weeks minimum.

IsItGinOclock1 · 14/07/2020 00:13

A scan isn’t going to tell you which gender your baby is, I mean you might be able to find out the biological sex?! They’ve always got a 50/50 chance of getting it right so I guess it’s worth a stab in the dark for them if they are charging you!

I don’t understand why people need to know the sex of the baby at 3 weeks pregnant? I seem to be in the minority having never found out the sex of my children until the day they arrived, it beats any “gender” reveal I've ever seen.

quietlyspoken08 · 14/07/2020 00:22

I found out I was having boys twice at my '12 week scan' was actually 14 plus a few days both times. Don't know if it's more obvious that it's a boy early on.

pinkblossomdreams · 14/07/2020 00:27

I got told at 12 weeks for each of mine on a scan. I also got my last two at 9 weeks by the Harmony test.

Wecandothis99 · 14/07/2020 05:59

Can't f ing believe another thread turned into a trans one. Stop the world I wanna get off!!! Idiots!!

Isthisfinallyit · 14/07/2020 06:06

Can the woke people stop please? Although having Body Dysmorphia is terrible, it's still a syndrom and not normal. Hence being called Dysmorphia Disorder.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 14/07/2020 06:16

With DD1, I had the scan (and baby) at a German teaching hospital. My scan was done by a professor with several students observing. He asked if we minded knowing the sex... And then proceeded to point out all the early indicators of sex in the foetus. It was quite fascinating. But pointed out to the students that it's not 100% accurate at that point. He was right though, she was a girl.

With DD2, back in England at a non teaching hospital... They couldn't tell whether the baby was male or female at the 20 week scan. The angle was wrong and she wouldn't keep still. She is still an awkward creature now at 7 years old.

WhatWouldPennyDo · 14/07/2020 08:50

@Kelcat9494 OP, to answer your question, it is possible (sometimes) to confirm a baby’s sex at 14 weeks or even before using a standard ultrasound. However, if you wait until after 16 weeks and, even better, up to 20 weeks, you’re much more likely to get a clear, unambiguous result as the baby’s genitals will be more developed. In your position, I’d hold fire for a few more weeks.

stairgates · 14/07/2020 09:08

How far along are you OP? Have you heard of the nub theory? I personally book a private scan for right on the 13th week mark and get some nice video clips of the profile of the baby, so where its laying down. From this angle you can see babies gender nub, long and flat for a girl, angled anr almost triangle shaped on top for a boy, my have all been clear as day. Can you afford a private scan on the 13th week mark? :)

Birdy1991 · 14/07/2020 09:28

Wow at the people making snide comments about the terminology the OP used. It was obvious what the OP was asking, why can’t people just be nice or don’t say anything!

Birdy1991 · 14/07/2020 09:31

Also as others have said I would recommend waiting until around 16 to 17 weeks. This was the advice I was given and I was told mine was a girl at 17+2, this was later confirmed at an nhs 32 week scan.

Sorbet18 · 14/07/2020 09:42

I had a gender scan at 14 weeks & they were correct. You could see quite clearly from the shot he was a little boy. Maybe girls would be slightly harder though.

I think there's only a few scanning places that offer them from 14 weeks so I'd check their website out & also reviews to see what other people say. If you're prepared there's a slight chance they'll say something different at the 20 week scan, I don't see the harm in having the early gender reveal scan if you want to

bluemoon2468 · 14/07/2020 09:46

@stairgates nub theory is just a theory with no actual evidential basis. It would be such a waste of money to have a private scan at 13 weeks just to get pictures of the nub when you could wait a few weeks and actually know for sure. My NHS 12 week scan was at 13 weeks and I got a really clear nub picture. All the 'experts' said definitely girl. It was completely flat (see pic). Luckily I just did it for a laugh and knew it was a 50/50 guess. I'm having a boy which has been confirmed at 3 scans now!

stairgates · 14/07/2020 10:28

bluemoon, I would have guessed girl for you too!Grin Was yours taken from a video or just a one off shot? If your lucky enough to get a video then it shows alot more than one angle and catches bits that arent always caught. If op can afford the video at 13 weeks then its worth looking into even just for the fun aspect :)

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 14/07/2020 10:31

It isn't a trans issue. It's a science issue.

Sex exists. You/your baby is biologically male or female. That is their sex. That is what the OP wants to determine.

Gender is not a scientific fact identified during a scan. It's a social construct.

It's like asking if your baby is a labour or conservative supporter.

stairgates · 14/07/2020 10:40

But does it have to be brought up on every thread? Can we not just have a sticky at the top of the pregnancy section explaining the difference and allowing everyone to understand but feel free to use their own term and it be respected. If I want to ask 'Does my baby have a foofoo or a winky?' then Im sure other posters know what I mean.

peachypetite · 14/07/2020 10:44

What’s the rush? You’ll find out at 20 weeks Smile

bluemoon2468 · 14/07/2020 11:36

@stairgates it was from a couple of pictures, but even when I was watching the scan live I was thinking that nub is completely flat! Literally 3 weeks later went to a private scan and there were his boy parts, clear as day! Crazy how quickly they can develop out of seemingly nowhere between 12 and 16 weeks.

Miljea · 14/07/2020 12:33

If the boys who want to be girls on their say-so were 'playing nice', we wouldn't be where we are.

We, as (predominantly) natal women, have to keep 'saying something'.

Soz.
