Can they really tell the gender at 14 weeks?

Hello,

A girl I know on Facebook had a private gender scan at 14 weeks and I'm considering booking in but will they be able to tell or is it too soon?

Thanks

I think it's too soon - the clinic I went to would only do it between 18-23 weeks x

Depends whether she had the NIPT at the same time as the scan? I found out at 10 weeks, but that was from the blood test, not the scan image.

The only person I know who found out the gender at a scan this early was later (correctly) told the opposite.

SunbathingDragon · 13/07/2020 21:20

It will depend upon the skill of the person scanning and the position of the baby. Yes, it’s possible to tell from a scan at that gestation but few would probably do so that early on.

I had a private scan at 15 weeks and sonographer asked if I wanted to know the sex. She said she was pretty sure it was a girl but wouldn't like to say for sure until 20 week scan. She was correct though!

crazychemist · 13/07/2020 21:36

I found out at 16 weeks, and they said it was very clear at that stage. But I’m carrying twins, and only one was in a position such that they could tell (but as they are identical, obviously the other one is also male). So I assume it depends a lot on baby’s position? Maybe if you wait until 16 weeks or so your odds are much better of finding out?

Magicbabywaves · 13/07/2020 21:37

I asked at 12 weeks what the person doing the scan thought and they got it right.

Wecandothis99 · 13/07/2020 21:37

I found out at 10 weeks, blood test privately with the harmony test

Wecandothis99 · 13/07/2020 21:38

Also, that's obvs 100% accurate

joystir59 · 13/07/2020 21:40

No they can't tell the fender but they might be able to tell the sex

Mamette · 13/07/2020 21:44

Like pps, I found out at 11 weeks via the Harmony test.

No genitals need to be observed, it’s all there in the DNA.

Kelcat9494 · 13/07/2020 21:55

I might look into doing it the blood way then, I don't care whether the baby is a boy or a girl, I just want to know so I can feel like I "know" them

I waited until 17 weeks to get a private scan so OH could be there with me but still didn't believe it fully until it was confirmed at the 20 week scan.

I would have enjoyed seeing our baby again at 14 weeks but i would have taken any prediction on sex with a pinch of salt. They have a 50/50 chance of getting it right at that gestation.

ohwhattodowithmylife · 13/07/2020 22:18

With both my children I had a scan by a professor who was able to tell me the sex at the 12 week scan. He was right both times

JaJaDingDong · 13/07/2020 22:30

They might be able to tell her the sex, but the baby's gender won't become apparent until it's older - apparently.

They have a 50/50 chance of getting it right before it's even conceived. Last time I checked there were only two options available.

Pinkyyy · 13/07/2020 22:32

The OP clearly isn't interested in people talking about sex Vs gender so I'm not sure why people are being snide.

ClaraLane · 13/07/2020 22:33

When I went for my 12 week scan the sonographer told me I was in fact 13+2 and told us what she thought the sex was. We had it confirmed by a private scan at 16 weeks and she was right.

JaJaDingDong · 13/07/2020 22:53

Well the OP is wrong then.

Kelcat9494 · 13/07/2020 23:01

@JaJaDingDong

Well the OP is wrong then.
I'm all for trans rights. Where I come from I've only ever seen it called a "gender scan" and "gender reveals". Of course I meant the sex of the baby and if in the future my child has a different gender than it's sex then fair enough.

Why?
Jilljams · 13/07/2020 23:02

My scans are done by a very experienced obstetrician, who is a specialist in fetal ultrasounds. He told me he can usually tell if it’s a boy as early as 13 weeks but not the other way round (might think girl but turns out to be boy). He doesn’t tell parents then as there is still room for error. At 16 weeks he can say for certain.

Pinkyyy · 13/07/2020 23:02

Oh, yes she is.

Kelcat9494 · 13/07/2020 23:05

@Pinkyyy

Oh, yes she is.
I'm not looking to make this political. I just wanted to know if it's possible to know the sex, gender whatever you want to call it of the baby at 14 weeks before I book an appointment.

A gender scan at 16 weeks is much more accurate than at 14 weeks because the genitals aren't well developed then. I know it's nice to know, but you have the whole rest of your pregnancy and then the baby's whole life to know. Waiting a few more weeks isn't too hard, and it's much better to be able to be confident in what you're told rather than doubting it and having to wait until the 20 week scan for confirmation!
