20 week scan cyst found - any experience?

Hi all, I am 20 weeks today and had my 20 week scan this morning.

Baby was all good, wriggly and happy. All organs fine, measuring perfect. The only thing was the sonographer found a small abdominal cyst.

We're having a boy (very happy!!), and the sonographer was very confident of this in the scan. We only found the gender out after the scan (in the car where DH was waiting) as she wrote it down for us, otherwise I would have asked this question in the scan, as the sonographer was saying it could be a cyst in the kidney, or an ovarian cyst. Now, I thought that had given the game away and we were having a girl, as I didn't realise boys had ovaries of any sort - I am so confused!!

I will be contacted again soon for a follow up appointment and maybe another scan to talk through the findings. The sonographer didn't seem too concerned at all, and said they generally go away on their own.

Two things:

  1. have you heard of boys having ovarian cysts? Could the sonographer be referring to the male sexual organs?
  2. has anyone else experienced this and if so, what happened?

No idea, but boys don't have ovaries. Even when they're foetuses.

I'm pretty certain she was talking about you, not the baby! Congratulations BTW!

Are you sure the sonographer didn’t mean that you had an abdominal cyst?

Yeah the cyst will be on your ovary, not the babies!

baby's Blush

Haha, thanks everyone. I didn't bloody think so 😂 however, I saw the cyst she was talking about, and it was very much in the baby's abdomen, rather than me. That's why I was so confused when she had been talking about a potential ovarian cyst, and we opened our little note to reveal we're having a boy!!!

I guess I've got lots of questions for my midwife!

Did she say potentially an ovarian cyst before looking to see if the baby was a girl or a boy?

I’d say this is it. From speaking to sonographers they have to go out of their way to find out the sex, so she probably didn’t know at that stage.

I literally cannot remember, as I was a bit overwhelmed. But that's logical!

Hi there!

The sonographer found a cyst at my 20 week scan, it’s near to my right ovary/in my right ovary it was too hard to tell. I got referred to see my consultant who I saw last week but she wasn’t concerned at all. It measures about 7cm just now but she said they will just scan me a couple of months after baby is born to see if it has grown, shrunk or disappeared. She said there’s a chance it can just disappear during the pregnancy and I only need to contact them if I end up in any pain. So far, so good and I wouldn’t even know it’s there Smile

The sonographer found a cyst in my baby’s abdomen at scan (around 32 weeks). All was fine, she was scanned a couple of times at the hospital after birth and by the time she was 16 weeks old it had gone away on its own. Hope this helps!
