Ketones +++ at 34 week appointment

Wondering if anyone else has had this urine result and what happened?
Had my 34 week appointment today at a different hospital with different midwife as I was also seeing obstetrician there. This is the result the first midwife/nurse got and she seemed a bit concerned but didn't say anything further I should do. Mentioned it to second midwife who did my measurements and she also seemed a bit concerned but again didn't say anything further I had to do. Doesn't sound good if you Google it though.
Would appreciate any advice Smile

Are you eating enough? Ketosis happens when the body is burning it's fat stores. It's quite common in women with Hyperemesis.

In my second pregnancy at different appointments I had ++keytones and +++gluscose. I was given the gtt at 28w which was normal. I have no idea why I had such results; the mw just told me to eat healthily (which I was) and remember to eat breakfast (which I did). Nothing came of it and I had a healthy baby. Hopefully it's just a blip for you too!

Thank you for the replies @KatnissK and @Mynotsoperfectlittlefamily Smile I would say I'm eating enough- definitely not got a small appetite lol. Think I'm eating pretty healthy too. Not got any sickness either. This is the first time I've had a not so good test result but midwife forgot to check my urine 2 weeks ago and I never chased up about it so maybe it would've said it then too. Tried calling my local midwife team earlier but no answer. Will try again tomorrow just in case it's something I need to get checked more.

I had this the other day when I was in hospital. The midwife just said it means your body is burning fat stores if you havent eaten for a while. I eat plenty and I think the sample was done just before lunch so it was only a few hours I hadnt eaten for. I dont think it's anything to worry about.

toastandmoretoast · 07/07/2020 22:16

@UrsulaSings I guess it could've been the case for me too as I only ate about 40 minutes before going to do my sample. That was in the early afternoon so before then I hadn't eaten for probably 14 hours. Just wish the midwives had said that could be it. It was a bit of a convare belt up at that hospital lol Confused

I had ketones of 4+ at 13 weeks in my last pregnancy I was also severely dehydrated and had a really high heart rate, I was admitted to hospital against my many pleas of not wanting too they forced me to stay, if it had been left I wouldn't have made it another couple of days. Mine was caused by not eating or drinking enough, 12 hour stay in hospital plenty of food and water and they had dropped enough for me to be discharged, it was the scariest time if my life knowing if I didn't go in when I did I would not be here right now x

You can buy strips off Amazon to keep an eye on the ketones yourself at home, that's what I'm doing now in my current pregnancy as I don't want to risk it happening again x

Thanks for replying @Maidmummy Smile that sounds frightening what happened to you. I hope you don't have anything like that again. I spoke to my regular midwife today and she told me it'll be because I'm not eating breakfast early enough and having too big a gap between meals. Will defo be keeping that more in check now!
