Hello, I've recently found out I was pregnant, right as I started eating healthier and exercising to lose weight (not following a diet per se, but just trying to be healthier in general).
I'm almost 5 weeks and my GP doesn't have a midwife because of covid, and I've been told to phone my hospital midwife when I'm around 6/7 weeks to have my booking in appointment over the phone.

I've read about vitamins etc needed, as this was a surprise pregnancy. I've got vit D tablets already and a capsule with lots of vitamins in, with 400mcg of folic acid. However, my BMI is just over 30 at 30.4. so should I take the tablet with 400mcg of folic acid or take the recommended 5mg as my BMI is over 30? My doctor didn't seem to know and as they didn't have a midwife there anymore couldn't answer. Don't want to undertake for a couple weeks until I can talk to a midwife.

Thank you!

I had a BMI over 30 with my first 3 pregnancies. I was not told to take more than the lower dose (3 perfectly healthy children). It was only in my current pregnancy, BMI 37, that I was told to take the higher dose.

You can take both :). I took the 5mg Folic acid tablet and the pregnacare capsule which had 400mcg. My midwife said you can’t really take to much folic acid and advised it was safe to take both of them x

My bmi is 30.7 and the midwife told me to take 5mg, even though I was just over the 30 mark. She said better to have more than less if on the cusp. I also take a pregnacare type one so I’m definitely covered for folic acid!

Thanks for the replies, very appreciated Grin

I agree, I'd rather be taking more than I need than less.
