How far along am I?

Mumtobexo · 30/06/2020 12:08

Hi guys

I am so confused! I've been told two different dates of how far along I am and I'm not entirely sure.

My last period was on the 7th May 2020. I went for a private scan on the 25/02/20 at that time I was told I was 6 weeks and two days.

If I go by that date today would make me 7 weeks however after getting off the phone to the women's hospital the lady told me I was 7 weeks and 5 days. I'm super confused and I'm also not good with working out things like this. Could anyone help? I'd appreciate it soo much.

Thank You

X

You should go by your LMP date until you’ve had your 12 week scan which will give your your EDD (estimates due date)

Early scans can be tricky to date so they use your LMP until the 12 week one.

With my youngest two I was sure if my dates based on LMP big my early scans (due to many previous losses) Put me 7 days or so behind those dates. However at the 12 week scans I was bang exactly back on my dates with DD and actually further along by a few days with DS. The sonographer cola ones that pre 12 weeks it’s easier to mess up dating because baby is so small

Thank you. It is a tricky one but suppose the most accurate date will be at that 12 week scan

Definitely go from LMP until the 12 week scan.

LemonBreeland · 30/06/2020 12:17

Bear in mind that your 12 week scan may also change your date. In my NHS area they go by your due date based on lmp, unless your 12 week scan shows a date that is 7 or more days out from that. Then they will change your due date.

I had an awful consultant with DS1 who made me out to be some silly girl who couldn't remember when my lmp was as I measured 10 days out. They changed my due date to 10 days later, and then he came a week early. So it's really not an exact science.

user1493413286 · 30/06/2020 12:17

I had a scan at 7 weeks and then at my 12 week one was given a different due date of a couple of days later; they said that the 12 week scan is the most accurate and the one medical professionals will work from

sel2223 · 30/06/2020 12:43

I went for my first scan when i should have been 7+5 by LMP but baby only measured 6+1 so 11 days difference.
By the time I had my dating scan, baby had caught up by a week so was only 4 days different to my LMP which makes sense as my cycles are longer than average.

The midwives/doctors will go by your LMP until your dating scan as early scan measurements are not particularly accurate. Once you have your dating scan, that's when you'll get your official EDD

Gatomalo · 30/06/2020 13:11

Hi, I also have 35 day cycles and it is a bit confusing in the beginning because midwifes and the hospital will calculate your due date by you last menstrual period which will make you farther than you really are, but just go with it (even though you know is probably wrong). Once you have your 12 week scan they will give you a date which will be consistent with your 35 day cycle so you are probably less weeks than what they thought but that is okay. After the 12 week scan they will just go by the date that it measured so you will be fine.

If you use the nhs due date calculator you can set your cycle length to 35 days and that will give you a due date of 18th February and you should be around 6 weeks and 6 days.

But even if you tell this to your midwife they won’t change their estimations as they only use your LMD to calculate and assume we all have a 28 day cycle. But once you have your scan they will give you a better and more accurate due date.

Congrats in your pregnancy!

Sorry for jumping on the bandwagon here - I have very irregular periods and long cycles. Had my last period 6 April, so should have been 12w yesterday when I went in for my scan but they told me baby measures at 6w1d. They will call next week to check on me but yesterday they didn’t enquire how long my cycles usually are but just sent me away. So, I am absolutely fretting now - this wait will drive me insane!

Don't apologise that's fine! That's absolutely crazy though a WHOLE SIX WEEKS difference! What? Did you pay for a private scan or is this through the NHS? My first scan was private. I think for people with longer cycles it seems too be morel difficult to get the correct dates! I understand the fretting I'm doing that myself. For now I've decided too go off based on the first scan until I get one with the NHS

@Mumtobexo it was an NHS scan! I know six weeks sounds like a lot which is why I think I may be losing hope 😔

HeeeeyDuggee · 01/07/2020 19:36

@firevie my friend had ridiculously long / irregular cycles and no period for months. She had negative tests after her missed period but then at some point must have gotten pregnant because she Was pregnant about 3 months after her last period.

When was your positive test?

Thanks. I didn’t have a period in March, then had a period on 6 April. Positive test 24 May. So, if we go by my LMP and assume 28days cycle I should be 12w but I obviously don’t have a 28 day cycle. But they Sonographer didn’t even go into this much detail - just noted down 6 April and irregular periods and sent me home worrying because I was measuring 6w1d😔

bestbrowsintown · 01/07/2020 19:44

You probably are 7 weeks assuming your luteal phase is 14 days (which of course it may not be).
Scans are more accurate than LMP but a scan around 11-13 weeks will be more accurate than an early scan.

Congratulations

Thank you v much for your very sweet message. I’m just a wreck! Don’t feel like doing or eating anything. I just want to sleep and cry! I so hope you’re right and that my baby is fine and growing healthily and steadily 🙏🏽

I just realised I forgot to mention that when she measured 6w1d yesterday she couldn’t see a heartbeat yet but she said it would be too early yet hence asked to wait another week

Saw this online

"Not hearing a foetal heartbeat at 6 weeks is normal and there's no reason for worry. The gestational age of your pregnancy may also be inaccurate. Due to an irregular ovulation pattern or inaccurate estimate of your last menstrual cycle, you may not really be 6 weeks pregnant."

I wouldn't worry. Some people can detect a heart beat via vagina ultrasound at 5 1/2 weeks and some have heart beats at 6 weeks but every women and pregnancy is of course difference but not hearing on this early on is seen as normal so I'd wait. If it was past seven weeks with no heart beat then I'd worry as it would sound like miscarriage

@Mumtobexo thanks so much for your reassurance! This waiting game is hell. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to just stop fretting over it and focusing on different things. I just need to find a way to stay positive for another week. So much easier said than done though

HeeeeyDuggee · 01/07/2020 20:52

@firevie sounds very much like my friend! By her LMP she was about 15 weeks but when she finally got her scan after a positive tree at she was only 5/6 because of her cycles. Going by your positive test dates since your period is irregular then it’s very possible all is fine!
My friend also didn’t see a heartbeat at that stage not until 8 weeks. We’re all different. I’ve always been lucky enough to see one at 5/6 weeks but it’s not always the case so please try not to get too worried. I think a healthy amount of hope and positivity wrt the pregnancy is a good idea!

Good luck for your next scan Flowers

@HeeeeyDuggee omg your friend’s story sounds so similar to mine. I desperately want to cling onto your friend’s story now. I know that all of you ladies are right that worry and stress is only harmful, so I should be focusing on being positive. I promise I will try for my baby’s sake! Thank you and I’ ll keep you posted xxx

@Mumtobexo thank you so much! Good luck to you also! Fingers crossed everything goes well in your pregnancy! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

UPDATE EPU just called. They called to confirm that they will call me next Tuesday to see how I am doing. If no bleeding they will get me in for another scan. Since the Sonographer didn’t really listen when I told her about my v long and irregular cycles I mentioned it to EPU on the phone just now. She noted down the information and said maybe it’s a very early pregnancy but we can’t be sure yet so we literally just have to wait and see. I am sorry not sure what the point of this post is - just wanted to share as I’m now feeling really down again!
