Baby measuring big

I had my 31 week appointment last week and bump was measuring big. Midwife said if he’s grown more by my next appointment in 3 weeks I’ll need to go for a growth scan. Has anyone else had this?

Yep I’m 32 weeks and his 5 pound 11! Estimated to be 9 pound 14 at birth so there’s now discussion of an elective cesarian. Nothing agreed yet and scans are being monitored

snch · 29/06/2020 20:32

@KittyKat2020 wowza! That's one big baby! Was your bump measuring big? Do you find out the weight at the growth scan? I'm a FTM so pretty clueless

I had my first bump measure last week and measuring above the 95th percentile at 28 weeks! Midwife didn't seem concerned at the moment but it's made me panic a bit! I know they aren't necessarily accurate though and the midwife said it doesn't necessarily mean a big baby, could be extra fluid, size of placenta etc.

snch · 29/06/2020 20:38

@FingersCrossedXXX yeah my midwife said the same. She kinda made it sound like the charts are a bit inaccurate.

Yep, been sent for 2 growth scans now as midwife said baby was big and in 97th percentile but the scans have shown she's growing at a normal rate. Am fully expecting to be sent for another at my next appointment.

Jojo19834 · 29/06/2020 20:41

Apparently they are. I have consistently measured 97% and she has no concerns. We I do, that’s a near 11lb baby you are telling me needs to be pushed out!

KittyKat2020 · 29/06/2020 20:45

@snch I’ve had he growth scans since 28 weeks as been measuring big and 99th percentile! I’m a FTM too so it’s all a bit scary tbh but they’ve now decided I won’t have another scan until 36 weeks then a decision will be made

octobersky19 · 29/06/2020 20:47

Yep 4lb at 27 weeks, 10lb 1oz at 38.5 weeks

Born by elective csection with the help of forceps due to his size and position

We had regular growth scans to keep an eye on his growth. No gestational diabetes, I just grew a big boy

GracieLouFreebushh · 29/06/2020 20:52

I measured big, had 2 growth scans which they said he was measuring around 50-60th percentile and ended up with 7lb 5lb baby and he was late.

KittyKat2020 · 29/06/2020 20:53

@octobersky19 they needed to use forceps in an elective cesarian?? I’m against forceps and the suction due to the damage they can do to baby’s head and face so I’ve been very clear on no instruments.

octobersky19 · 29/06/2020 20:57

@KittyKat2020 yeah, the consultant said they needed them urgently to help get him out. His head was cut and bruised but he's 8 months now and no lasting damage.

I didn't know they could use forceps during a csection so I was completely shocked but wanted them to do whatever they needed to do to get him out

rhowton · 29/06/2020 20:59

Take this with a pinch of salt. I was predicted two 9.5lbs+ babies. I had one 6lbs12oz and one 7lbs10oz. I had repeated growth scans and was fine.

KittyKat2020 · 29/06/2020 21:02

@octobersky19 that’s interesting, I never knew they used them in cesarian. I’ve just seen babies have nerve damage from forceps so it scares me so much

MrsStavrum · 29/06/2020 21:02

I had 3 growth scans with my first and was told he would be over 10lbs so I was induced. He was 7lbs 8oz when he was delivered at 39 weeks so try not to worry too much xxx

Babyshine2020 · 29/06/2020 21:08

At my 28 week appointment my bump was measuring on the 97th, I went again at 31 weeks to be told bump had grown 1cm and out me on the 70th (ish) and was sent for a scan. Baby measured in average 70th too - I'd say the bump measurement isn't accurate at all. I get my appointment at the same time (9am) so I can try and keep things consistent as there are so many variables as to why your stomach would bigger, food, drink, needing the toilet, bloat... it seems silly to me!

AConvivialHost · 29/06/2020 21:13

I didn't have any growth scans with my first, despite MW saying I was measuring big, and being referred to the consultant who had a feel and said 'yes, she's big, but how big is big?'!!. She ended up being delivered by emergency section following three failed inductions and was 11lb 6.5oz at 42 weeks. The consultant did pop in to see 'the whopper' the day after she was born. Had regular growth scans with my second, and she was 9lb 13oz at 39 weeks.

sassysoul · 29/06/2020 22:01

How do they actually estimate the size of the baby? I had a measurement of my bump today so 28+3 and midwife said it was 28cm and baby was 75th percentile, but how do they actually calculate that?

KittyKat2020 · 29/06/2020 22:07

All my measurements have been taken from scans

NLW91 · 29/06/2020 22:10

I think it’s a 31 week thing. I was measuring fine and then on my 31 week she measured me 2 weeks ahead. She sent me for growth scan to check for extra fluid and little man was absolutely fine. Fluid levels were spot on too. I’ve my 34 week appointment so let’s see what measurement she comes up with then. Remember that the measuring is very inaccurate at best of times. Baby’s position can change measurements a lot.

MojoJojo71 · 29/06/2020 22:16

@sassysoul the midwife will plot the measurement on your customised chart but all that will tell her is that the fundal height is on the 75th centile, not the baby. It’s a screening tool to determine whether a growth scan is required rather than an accurate measurement

orangejuicer · 29/06/2020 22:25

My baby measured big and came out at 10 lbs 3. Sometimes scans are accurate!

Latenightreader · 29/06/2020 22:36

My daughter was 7lb12 after they predicted she’d be well over 9lb. She was very long, and is still tall for her age (20 months).

Avearage · 29/06/2020 23:00

I really hate the ohhhh such a big baby.... My 3rd was just under 9lb.... She looked dinky wore newborn clothes but as soon as weight was mentioned its like oh wow you gave birth to a monster!! Everyone is convinced this baby will be bigger being the 4th I just want a healthy baby!!

Rubyroost · 29/06/2020 23:11

My baby measured 6lb 5 at 32 week growth scan (because I was 40) subsequent growth scans showed he was consistently massive and as a result he was taken out by C section at 37 weeks (I had already opted for c section anyway). He was 6lb 14 and in the 57th percentile!

Felicityfi16 · 30/06/2020 11:50

I know it’s easy for me to say but try not to worry -the scans are a very rough estimate! Mine was the other way around and was measuring small and hadn’t grown within 3 weeks. I went for a growth scan and they found baby was big rather than small! I was shocked as they told me baby was too small but when she was born she was 6lbs 10 so everyone was wrong 😂 it could be down to position, size of placenta, extra fluid and even the person measuring as I found 3 midwives were measuring completely different within 3 days of each other x
