I’m currently 20+4 weeks pregnant, this morning I feel really short of breath is this normal? Im struggling to catch my breath like I’ve been running but not sure if I’m panicking a bit and making it worse

I was short of breath in my pregnancies, but you should really ring your midwife and ask them what they think or get them to check you over. It could be a number of things. Hope you feel better after that. You'll definitely feel better having your mind put at rest!

Thankyou WorstGovtEver I’m going to give her a call

Totally normal. Your lung capacity reduces so you can be short of breath much more easily.

eandz13 · 28/06/2020 12:42

Get your iron levels checked. I've had exactly the same thing since 12 weeks due to my iron being low. Really frustrating.

BeforeIPutOnMyMakeup · 28/06/2020 12:44

I was about to say anaemia as well.

Sexnotgender · 28/06/2020 12:44

Definitely get your iron levels checked.

sel2223 · 28/06/2020 13:11

It's pretty normal. Baby is growing and everything is getting a bit more squashed in there.
I've had this on and off throughout pregnancy depending on baby's position and am over 33 weeks now (and my iron levels are fine).
It's worth calling for advice if you're worried though.

MATTSMAMMA · 28/06/2020 13:25

A little breathlessness is normal but definitely get blood tests for anaemia as this can cause breathlessness too x

xxmrsbxx · 28/06/2020 13:30

Thanks everyone, I’ve had my iron levels checked all good.. it seems to have eased off a bit now I think I was making it worse as I was panicking a bit

I'm a midwife and whilst it is normal to have mild shortness of breath as your uterus grows. It is not normal to have it start suddenly and at 20 weeks I would be a bit concerned. Please either call triage or see your GP if this is still going on and especially if you have any chest pain/leg pain.

xxmrsbxx · 28/06/2020 14:10

Thank you stopchewingeverything for the past few days I’ve also been suffering from a really dull ache down my right leg into my foot. I’ve just phoned midwife but it went to answering machine hopefully she will get back to me

If she doesn't, please follow it up - it's probably totally normal, but it might be a DVT/pulmonary embolism, which are serious and need rapid treatment. (They're really rare, so please don't panic about the possibility, but I had a DVT appear at about that gestation in my first pregnancy, so I'm a bit paranoid about them!)

xxmrsbxx · 28/06/2020 22:09

@MumInBrussels I will give her a call again in the morning

I would ring out of hours GP due to the leg pain + breathlessness. If it is a DVT or PE you need to be seen tonight.
