Early scan at 5 weeks - why??

I got my BFP last night and worked out from my last period I should be about 5+2. I have been seeing my GP for some abdominal pain for a few months and had an appointment with him this morning. I advised of BFP and he said before he sent me for a consultation with a specialist (for the stomach pain) he wanted to send me to a gynaecologist for a scan to make sure everything was okay with the pregnancy first. This seemed a bit ridiculous to me as I'm so early but he was adamant he would need the all clear from them before passing me on to the other consultant.

So I got referred for an urgent appointment with the gynaecologist this afternoon (not in the U.K. so things moved quite fast). He did a scan and said he can find no evidence of a pregnancy and there was no way I could be 5+2 weeks. I took 3 FRER last night and all were clearly positive. He also said from my blood test results from the day before, my HCG levels were only at 27. He said that he wasn't saying I wasn't pregnant, but that he couldn't see any evidence that I was other than slightly elevated HCG levels (but they were a lot lower than they should be).

He has booked me in for another blood test tomorrow morning to check if my HCG levels have risen. But I am just so confused as to what is going on.

Also, my GP prescribed me Pregaday to start taking but after taking one, I read the leaflet (I know I should have read it first) and it said they weren't to be taken before 13 weeks.

I'm just so confused as to how I got 3 BFPs but no evidence of any pregnancy and there being apparently no way my dates work.

I don't really know why I'm positing, other than to just write it down. Sorry for the long post and slight ramble, I'm just very confused and scared. I don't know why they even scanned me so early, surely even if I were 5 weeks they'd have barely been able to see anything anyway. I wish I could go back and not have the scan - now I'm just terrified.

It is so stressful isn't it. But as you ladies say, what will happen will happen so it's best to try not to worry (so much easier to say than do though!).

I have been feeling very 'off' the last two days. I'm certain (rationally) that it's just my pregnancy symptoms ramping up but I (irrationally) am very worried that actually it's a negative sign.

Just counting down the days until my scan on the 13th. Hoping it's good news for us all x

I'm really struggling today. I seem to have convinced myself that the pregnancy isn't viable. I don't really have any symptoms other than tiredness and a hint of nausea but nothing like it was when I was pregnant with my son. I've been having a lot of cramping both in the front and in my lower back - not severe but definitely enough to notice and make me sort of catch my breath. That's been going on for a week or so now. I don't know how I'm going to wait another week for my scan - I just feel like I want to know now.

The more I think about it, the more I'm confused about my dates. My LMP would put me at 6+6 but which means I should have been about 5+3 when I went for my first scan. The fact that they couldn't see anything and my hCG was so low has got me worried. It did increase, but I just can't understand how my dates would be so far out that they couldn't see anything at that appointment.

I just can't seem to get it out of my head that something has happened - this wait has already been torture! God I hate the first trimester!

I also took a clear blue digital yesterday and it was still showing 2-3 weeks. Which means I can't be more than 5 weeks? My LMP was on the 18th May - it just doesn't make any sense.

I don’t think the clear blue digitals are accurate measures of weeks after the first 2-3 weeks so please don’t worry about that. I will be keeping fingers crossed for you about the scan.

I've gone from thinking I don't want my second scan as it'll cause me too much worry for desperately wishing i could just have it now. My head is a mess!! I need to try to not worry but I'm finding it so difficult!

@JBCG I’m so sorry you’re feeling low today! I am preparing for the worst as I’ve been having some spotting since yesterday. That combined with how off my dates are, my husband and I are preparing for the worst. I’ve been resorting to my gratitude diary, The Secret book, believing in the universe and that things will get better! I will call EPU tmr and ask to be seen. Good luck to you! I've been really stupid and asked for an hCG test to be included in my antenatal bloods I had yesterday. Apparently it was 8000 odd, which while does tie in with me being between 6-7 weeks, if I double every 2 days what it was when I had my blood taken 14 days ago - I should be about 15,000.

Now I know that some people's levels don't double every 48 hours (sometimes more like 72) but I've pretty much convinced myself now that something is wrong. I have lost any hint of tiredness and nausea that I had and all my cramping has stopped except an ache in my lower back.

My scan is on Monday but I'm just preparing to be told they need to rescan in a week or two to confirm it's not viable. I don't know how I'm going to cope with potentially another 2 weeks of just waiting to find out bad news

@JBCG oh no! Hope your levels keep rising and you get good news!!!! No good news for me I’m afraid. I’m bleeding and have a scan on Thursday to confirm and then if my body hasn’t done it’s work naturally to have a surgery next Tuesday. I’ve been lucky in getting appointments v easily but I just called up my private health insurance and decided to go with them as my friend went through something similar in April and gave me the name of her doctor who was nice, so I decided to see him directly. I really hope it all goes well for you! The waiting game is horrible but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you xxx

Thank you. I've not slept all night. Had one episode of bright red blood last night at 11pm. I'm really really nervous this morning. How are you feeling? Strange question but I seem to have spotting etc when I need a bowel movement? Will know all in a few hours xx

I'm really nervous too - my scan is not until later this afternoon so I've got all day to work myself up 😕

Not sure about the spotting I'm afraid, could just be due to pressure or something? Hopefully it's nothing to worry about!

Hope everything went well for you ladies.

I had a bleed last week. Had a scan, saw baby and all was well but I've been having spotting, cramping and back pain and I'm terrified something bad is going on. I have my dating scan tomorrow.
@STCMB I have the same thing re bowel movements and the spotting.

Thank you all. The scan went really well, I'm so relieved! Measuring about 6+5 and saw a little heartbeat flickering. It still is obviously very early days but I am feeling much better.
