Hi I have a scan on the 13th July I will be just 7 weeks by then, I'm wondering will I hear the heart beat or will I see it flutter on the scan?

Hi OP, if you are 100% sure of your dates and the baby is 7 weeks at the scan then you should definitely see a heartbeat by then (i heard it too but some places only show the flicker on the screen).

If you are not 100% sure on when you ovulated though, i personally would put the scan back closer to 8 weeks to allow a margin of error. It's very common for babies to measure smaller at early scans (i went at 7+5 from LMP and baby only measured 6+1) but it causes so much anxiety and worry if it turns out it's too soon to see/hear a heartbeat. There are posts every day on MN from worried mums to be about this exact thing.

Thanks for replying so I'm just going from the first day of my last period which was 25th May so I'm not 100% on dates but as long as I see a flicker I'll be okay

Mine was 7+5 from the first day of my last period and baby only measured 6+1. Luckily I saw/heard a strong heartbeat but they said a day or 2 earlier I might not have seen anything at all.
As long as you are prepared for that and understand the dates aren't always accurate this early on then you'll be fine.

I'm 32 weeks now by the way so all was fine. I just ovulated late that month.

You’re not even due your period yet and you have a scan booked?

@Smallsteps88 I missed that! Shock

I personally would wait until 8-9 weeks. I had a scan at my EPAU at what I thought was 7 weeks (due to recurring miscarriages) and I was measured 8 days behind. I was lucky and saw the heartbeat, but if it was a day earlier I probably would not have seen anything and it would cause me a huge amount of stress.
If I was booking a private scan I would probably wait until my period was officially late.

@Smallsteps88 who said I haven't missed a period yet or been due one? @sel2223

Based on a regular 28 day cycle (Which is what the NHS use to calculate EDD) your period would be due on Monday. Are your cycles shorter than 28 days? It would need to be a 25 day cycle or shorter in order for you to have missed your period today. Have you had a positive test result?

So my cycles aren't always 28 days and yes I've had positive results but the reason why am booking in for scans is because I recently had a miscarriage an obviously want some piece of mind to know everything is ok

I understand you being keen to have an early scan after a MC but I would honestly wait until a week or so after your missed period before booking anything just to rule out a chemical or very early MC.

Booking now then having to ring and cancel or booking a scan too soon and not seeing a heartbeat is honestly not going to give you piece of mind.

It's still very early and if the dates are out then there is a chance you won't see the heartbeat.
I would maybe consider pushing it back a week or 2 to allow for the dates possibly not being accurate.
That way you don't have the risk of going and being earlier then you thought.and risking having to go back to see if all is ok.
Keeping everything crossed it all works out for you. X

I’m sorry you went through that OP, but I do agree with sel2223 and others that for your own state of mind you should wait a bit. I realise it’s very exciting and you want to get everything confirmed but you are so very early on and so many pregnancies don’t progress beyond 6 weeks. (Which is absolutely normal btw) it won’t do your emotional well being any good at all to keep repeating a cycle of early testing, booking scans, and then having to cancel again. Fingers crossed all goes well for you OP and you see your baby’s heartbeat on the scan.

All my very early scans have just been a visual of the heartbeat. In double digits before we listened to it.

I've pushed it back a week so I'd be 8 weeks so hopefully that's time enough to see a heartbeat thanks for the comments really appreciate it xxx
