Worried about blood test for Down syndrome

Hi all! I'm just looking for some reassurance I guess. I'm 30 years old and 16 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I live on the Algarve in Portugal. I've had my first trimester scan at 14 weeks, and based on my age the doctor wanted me to come back for a genetics blood test as I was considered intermediate risk of having a baby with Down's syndrome.
Between the language barrier (the doctors are really reluctant to explain anything in English) and the fact that because of Covid I can't take my husband in (who is Portuguese) I'm really stressing about these tests. It was a simple blood test and I should have the results next week - but I've read that they should be doing scans and other tests to determine the risk. Has anyone else had a simple blood test for this? Or know how accurate or otherwise it is?
Sorry for the rambling

@Scotinportugal

Amazing news! Xx

Scotinportugal · 02/07/2020 23:32

@Onceuponatimethen

That is brilliant news op - is that for the harmony/nipt or the original tests?
Thank you! So relieved Smile that was just the original screening. Hopefully get the notes through soon and I can take them to my doctor and see what he makes of it all.

I just saw your news @Scotinportugal, I’m delighted for you and so glad you pushed for proper explanations and answers. I hope you can relax and enjoy now :) Time is flying by isn’t it! Can’t wait for my 20 week scan, feels like such a long time since I saw this little one.

Scotinportugal · 04/07/2020 16:25

Thank you @Foreverbaffled! When is your scan? Have you found out what you're having? I've just booked mine for the 17th so I'll be exactly 20 weeks Smile can't wait to see baby again it feels like forever between 12 and 20 weeks doesn't it! Time really is flying now

@Scotinportugal how exciting! Mine is the day before yours when I will also be 20 weeks exactly. We’re having a surprise but I’m positive it’s another boy. I think I’m anxious at the moment as don’t seem to be feeling a massive amount of movement. Some days some flutters and rolls but then some days with nothing at all. Have you felt much? I didn’t feel anything with my son until I was 24 weeks because I had an anterior placenta so maybe the same situation. Just wish my 16 week midwife appt has been face to face rather than by telephone as they often try to find the heartbeat with a Doppler at that point and it can be so reassuring.

Ah I’m sure all will be okay, just need to stay positive 🙂

Scotinportugal · 04/07/2020 22:39

@Foreverbaffled I wish I had your patience, I kind of wanted a surprise too but couldn't seem to get the word 'no' out when the doctor asked me if I wanted to know! Did you keep it a surprise with your son too? I haven't felt anything yet, I lay down and concentrate but as of yet nothing Confused sometimes feeling a slight pulling sensation but not sure if that's baby or just muscle pain 😂

Ohh I don’t blame you for wanting to find out and I think you said you’re having a little boy? How lovely. We had a surprise last time too - my husband loves the idea of not knowing and I’m happy to go along with that really. Little boys are great :)

It’s reassuring that you’re not feeling loads of movement either. I went on some baby birth board on another site and they were all feeling lots of movement even externally which seems really unlikely to me. Only 11 days to go! Ahhh.

Scotinportugal · 05/07/2020 08:30

Yes little boy Grin I can't wait! My sister is also pregnant she's about 5 weeks ahead of me and she didn't feel any movement at all until about 20/21 weeks so that's definitely made me feel a bit better!
I'm sure we will feel something soon. Let me know how your scan goes, I'll be waiting anxiously for mine Thanks

Thanks lovely! You too, hopefully we will both be reassured :)

Foreverbaffled · 16/07/2020 21:17

Hi @Scotinportugal, just to say good luck for your scan tomorrow!

Mine went fine, all looking good and measuring well :) Such a relief, but was so sad my husband couldn’t come with me. Going to book a private scan when 30 weeks + so he can at least see the baby before he/she comes.

Scotinportugal · 17/07/2020 10:09

Hi @Foreverbaffled!

I'm so glad your scan went well and you're feeling relief makes such a difference! Have you felt any movement yet?

They changed mine to yesterday morning, what a difference the private scan was to my other one! Doctor explained everything in depth, spoke great English so I'm feeling much more reassured too! I have an anterior placenta which is why I haven't felt anything yet, but it's also low lying which I'm hoping changes! Baby is measuring a week ahead so they've changed my due date to 30/11/2020! I'm back to the same hospital at 28 weeks for another scan, as there's not enough blood flowing through my cord to baby, so doc wants to check it again before my 32 week scan also with him!

Have you started buying baby stuff yet? I feel like I can go on a shopping spree now Grin

Hope you other ladies are all Well too ThanksThanks

Got some lovely clear 4d pics of baby covering his face Smile

Foreverbaffled · 17/07/2020 16:21

Ohh @Scotinportugal that picture is absolutely gorgeous and so clear! I’m really happy for you. It’s good you are getting extra scans to monitor growth but I’m sure if they were really worried about the cord blood flow they would be seeing you earlier. Most low lying placentas move up and out the way along time before labour so am sure that will be fine too.

I’ve been so cautious about buying anything yet but I definitely feel more relaxed now so have been putting a list together Grin Exciting times!
