Early Reassurance Scan Question

Hi. I am 5 weeks pregnant today.
Due to having a miscarriage at my last pregnancy we are contemplating an early reassurance scan.

However, we don't know when to book it for?
Which week would be best?

Thank you

Congratulations! I think they say after 7 weeks you’re more likely to see a heartbeat. I’d probably wait until 8 weeks to be sure in case your dates are slightly out

I had an early scan at 6w 3d which is the earliest a hb can be detected but i think we were lucky. 7w 4d at subsequent pregnancy and also had a hb clearly.

It depends when you miscarried in your previous pregnancy I would wait until the same time

Hi, congratulations! I had one at 7 weeks and we saw the heartbeat. I decided to wait until then as more chance of seeing everything as it should be and didn’t want the worry of being to early and heartbeat not visible yet. I had to have an internal as couldn’t get a clear enough image abdominally

I went for one as early as possible, similar situation having had 2 MCs last year - one was a blighted ovum so I wanted reassurance as soon as I could that there was actually a baby in there this time. I went at what I thought was 6+1 and we saw a tiny prawn with a heartbeat, the lady scanning me said if we’d gone the day before we probably wouldn’t have seen anything and she dated me as 5 weeks. As it turned out, when o went back three weeks later I’d caught up with myself and measured bang on 9 weeks and by the time I got to 12 weeks I was 2 days ahead. So early measurements are a bit of guess work. If you can hold off until 7 weeks that might be better as your chances of seeing something are much better, if I’d gone a day earlier we wouldn’t have seen anything and that would have had the opposite of reassurance! Congratulations on your pregnancy Flowers

I held off until 9 weeks and glad I did as there's much more to see. It was an internal scan, but that was purely to get a clearer image

When you say you are 5 weeks today, is that from LMP or do you know 100% when you ovulated?

I had my first scan at 7+5 (from LMP) but baby only measured 6+1. By the time I had my dating scan baby had caught up by a week and im now 31 weeks.

If you go too early, you run the risk that your dates might be a bit out and there won't be anything to see, no hb etc which will just cause you even more worry and anxiety.

Personally I wouldn't go before 7 weeks - to allow a margin of error. 8 weeks is even better as your chances of MC go down massively if you see a hb after 8 weeks.

I had a miscarriage recently so please don’t take offence but there’s really no point. I had 2 assurance scans and even saw a heartbeat, I did feel really reassured and then was informed of a mmc at my 12 week scan. I think if I’ve learned anything from the experience it would be that ultimately your personal chance of a miscarriage is 100% or 0% no number of scans will change that fact and it might just be getting your hopes up prematurely. I’m currently TTC and really feel that if I’m lucky TC again I will try to put things out of my mind and wait the 12 weeks.

Best of luck to you xx

I think must is down to your mental state and what will help get you through. I have had two miscarriages. With pregnancy 2 I booked for about 9 weeks - so about half way to scan and just after when I lost the first. 2 days before the scan I started bleeding and lost baby.

This time - no scan but we are thinking that if I get to 10 weeks without bleeding we will consider going to get harmony tests. 7 weeks now and it will be such a long 3 weeks!

So for me - I would consider when the last loss was and book for then

I had one at what I thought was 8 weeks. I measured as 7+4. I had another one at what I thought was 10 weeks. I was 9+5.

I would definitely wait until around 8 weeks as seeing a heartbeat at 6-7 weeks can be hit and miss.

I had a scan at 7+1 - at the EPU - and heartbeat was clearly visible. Try to wait until 7 weeks if you can.
