It’s almost at 100,000 signatures, and is about improving maternal mortality rates and health outcomes for black women in the U.K. Black women are more than 5x more likely to die during and after childbirth than white women.

This research was part of my work years ago. It is a shame that we still have to have petitions to get it taken seriously.
I have signed and shared.

Signed. @endofthelinefinally, what were the reasons for the disparity?

endofthelinefinally · 11/06/2020 12:25

@Thinkingg
It is very complex.
I worked in a very diverse and what used to be called economically deprived area. (15 years ago now).
I was looking at maternal and infant morbidity and mortality statistics in that area in order to compare with national figures.
I had a particular expertise in one cause of maternal death at that time.
While collecting and recording data, it became clear that there were variations associated genetic/physiological factors occurring in certain ethnicities.
In order to separate out all causes, it was necessary to unravel so many different things including socioeconomic factors, language/communication, culture and belief systems, diet, nutrition, education and also things like weight, BMI, blood pressure.
All these things had to be included and corrections made.
In the end, there were quantifiable risks in different groups.
Of course, my little bit of research was a long time ago and much more has been done since then by much cleverer people than me.
It is such a huge subject. I can only describe my tiny project.
We did develop screening tools and education for midwives as a result.

@endofthelinefinally that's really interesting.
It's disgraceful we are even having to petition for this is this day and ageSad
