Growth scan

Anybody had experience with growth scans? I had my 25 week midwife appointment today and I measured 25 when she measured my bump so I’m being sent for a growth scan tomorrow. This is my first baby so new to all this, should I be worried?

Did she say why you were being sent for a growth scan?

I had growth scans in all my pregnancies as I had a late loss in my first pregnancy plus both my full-term babies small, first DD was borderline IUGR and there was a worry DD2 was showing signs of IUGR too but both were later classified SGA (small for gestational age).

@Ash06 did she say why OP?

I didn't have my bump measured at all till 28 weeks!

Ash06 · 10/06/2020 14:54

She said because we were measuring just below the line on a growth chart

Sorry posted too soon! She said going off the growth chart, he’s showing just below average for baby’s size at this point.

My bump always measured small, I was sent for two growth scans and on both baby was exactly the size he should have been so dont worry! Its just the procedure that needs to be followed :)

sel2223 · 10/06/2020 15:12

Sorry pressed send accidentally...

At 29 weeks around 29cms, at 30 weeks around 30cms so cant imagine you're way off with 25cms at 25 weeks OP.
Just think of it as an extra opportunity to see your little one.
I'm paying privately for a growth scan at 31 weeks as my trust doesn't offer any standard scans after 20 weeks and I want to see how little lady is getting on.

Ash06 · 10/06/2020 15:12

@LadySlipper11 Thankyou that’s reassuring and has put my mind at ease!

@sel2223 That’s true I will try to look for the positives, my trust also doesn’t offer any scans after the 20 week one so it will be nice to be able to see him again.

My phone is having a fit OP, now it's removed my first (part finished) comment 🤣

What I had said is that I was wondering more why she'd started measuring you so early (25 weeks) as it's 28 weeks plus in my area.
Then I was saying that i've been told that 'as a guide' the bump should measure around the same as the number of weeks (mine was around 28cms at 28 weeks for example)

Apologies if the original comment reappears 🙈

You should have a personalised growth chart in your notes, I would have a look at that to see where the 25cm sits for you.

I didn't get measured until 28 weeks and was 26.5 cm which puts me on the 10th percentile for my growth chart. For other women than measurement might put them under the 10th percentile others closer to average. My midwife said she will be looking to see if she stays on that 10th percentile line or goes above/below it as what they are really looking for is consistent growth.

Try not to worry too much about being sent for a growth scan, fundal measurements come with a large error margin and can be inaccurate. That's why they back up any result which is on the edges (too high or too low) with growth scans.

A colleague of mine was told repeatedly she was having a big baby, it was a smidge under 7lbs!

Babyshine2020 · 10/06/2020 16:27

I didn't get measured until 28 weeks and I have a similar thread up at the minute. At 28+4 I measure 29cm but now I'm 31+4 and I'm measuring 30cm so I've gone from between the 90th and 97th line to between the 10th and 50th.

I've got my scan tomorrow but baby is wriggling around fine, I've put weight on in the last few weeks and bump has got bigger (more than 1cm I'd say!)

What I don't understand is how do they know it's consistent growth when they only have on measurement to compare it to, whose to say I was just bloated on my first measurement..?

But, at least it's another chance to see baby

My bump measurement was always way off think it was 21 at 25 weeks, I started having regular scans at 25 weeks onwards every 2-4 weeks. I was induced at 37 weeks and my daughter was 5lb 3oz.

Piper1879 · 10/06/2020 16:45

I'm measuring above the 97th percentile(28 weeks) was meant to have growth scans due to high bmi but they have no been cancelled as my bmi is 44.8 instead of the new quota of 45. Im quite worried but apparently I can't do anything about it

LadySlipper11 · 11/06/2020 13:56

How did the scan go OP?

Ash06 · 11/06/2020 14:20

@LadySlipper11 Everything is spot on & nothing to worry about, so relieved. Thankyou for asking x
