Waterproof mattress protectors safe?

Hi all..

I'm looking into some bedding and have read in various places to use a mattress protector to keep the mattress hygienic.

But I'm a bit confused as to what material the mattress protector should be to keep it safe..and there's not much guidance on this.

Does anybody know?

I have bought one and it's a terry cotton mattress protector made from polyurethane which is supposed to be breathable. Should I be looking for specific material?

I bought this after a couple of recommendations, it hasn't been tested yet as still waiting for baby to arrive Grin The Little Green Sheep Waterproof Mattress Protector 83 x 50cm (to fit Next to Me Bedside Crib) www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01CNOU0H8/ref=cm_sw_r_wa_apa_i_5sr3Eb6T60R9G?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

@hodge85 I've spotted that one. I think I'd prefer one with elasticised edges to go over the mattress so it stays in place and found it a bit pricey as I'd probably get a couple to cover for accidents
