10cm cyst found at scan

Today I had my dating scan and they found a 10cm cyst on my ovary.

Just hoping for some reassurance as I know they are common but I also got told this is larger than normal.

Ive got to go back on Tuesday to talk about it.

I went to the doctors in January with abdominal pain and because I felt the need to wee regularly and got fobbed off so considering these are the two biggest symptoms of cysts I think it's been around a while.

Anybody been in a similar situation?

Mine was taken out at my recent csection and was 52 cm wide after they’d drained 3 litres of fluid from it! You’ll be fine, just make sure you’re consultant led and I was told no hard exercising and no yoga etc to minimise the risk of it bursting.

I had one which was found when i was 10 weeks pregnant. Very painful and was also about 10cm. In the end they drained it with a big needle rather than risk surgery. It never refilled and the sac just disappeared eventually as they rechecked after my son was born.

Did they tell you what type of a cyst it is?

@Rebecca612 - wow that's crazy! 52cm 😮 thanks for getting in touch.

@Titsywoo - they mentioned they wouldn't operate but maybe draining will be an option for me! I think I would much rather I know its gone.

@TheFoz - no they didn't mention what type just that it was larger than they normally like. Hopefully will find out more on Tuesday.

Thank you all though. It was definitely a shock to hear but I feel better already!

Just an update if anybody reads this that is in the same situation.

I had a follow up appointment today and they explained it is a simple wall cyst and therefore harmless unless it twists or ruptures. They are offering me an additional two scans before my 20 week scan to keep an eye on it.

If it stays throughout il have another scan 6 weeks after birth to see if it needs removing.

Pleased with the outcome and hoping it shrinks!

Hey, bit of a late reply but thought I'd let you know that they found a 13cm cyst at my my twelve week scan. I was told they're common and normally go. I had to have a scan at 16 weeks to see what was happening and by then it had shrunk, by 20 weeks it had gone :) freaked me out at the time because the cyst was bigger than the baby! (baby was and is completely fine btw)

Hi OP just to share another positive story, my 8cm cyst was found at my 12 week scan. I was consultant led and had a couple of extra scans to check baby's growth wasn't affected by it (it wasn't) and they said if I needed a C-Section they'd take it out then (I didn't). Baby is now a chatty 4 year old and the cyst was removed last year in a routine cystectomy.

Thanks @ItsMischerWavy and @Literaryseed. It's great seeing so many positive posts about that as I know the news of that cyst was a worry for me to begin with.

I was exactly the same and couldn't get over the fact this thing inside me was nearly twice the size of the baby. I'm hoping mine also shrinks but feeling positive either way.
