How long after birth until you took a shower?

Just as the title says, I was just wondering when people had a shower after giving birth? Did you go when there were visitors to supervise baby or when you were on your own? Did you wait until you got home? X

OP I had a similar experience, extremely long and painful labour before midwives realised my DS was back to back, they were trying to delay me until a doctor and operating theatre became available. I then had an episiotomy and forceps delivery. I was incredibly sore after the birth and did not shower until the third of my five day hospital stay. I remember standing in the shower and feeling all of the pain being washed away. Sending you all of the positive energy for your second labour, try not to worry yourself too much, I've heard it's never as difficult as your first SmileThanks xx

I was helped to have a bath, about eight hours after difficult birth, when I came round.

I was in a room with an en-suite so the nurse (midwife?) helped me while baby slept in cot, within view

I had a c-section so the next morning, it was horrendous and I could barely stand up. I got washed sitting on the side of the bath at home for the first few days then back to normal showers

About an hour after each birth. Basically as soon as my blood pressure had risen enough that the midwife felt it was ok and I was feeling less wobbly. DH cuddled the baby each time. With DC1 I remember the midwife told him to come into the bathroom with me to keep an eye on me so he sat on the toilet holding DC1 and passing me the shampoo whilst I showered. Didn’t have a hairdryer though and as I have long hair then had to put it in a damp pony tail to dry!

As soon as the spinal wore off really, probably 6-8 hours after, felt fine.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 05/06/2020 06:56

At about the 24 hr mark each time.

StoneSourFan · 05/06/2020 06:59

The delivery suit had an en-suite and as soon as the midwife was finished with my stitches I went in the shower! It was lovely! Xx

Quite quickly after, within an hour. I just left the babies as they slept for a full 24 hours after birth.

sunlightflower · 05/06/2020 07:05

First time around was a difficult birth and I didn't have a shower until I got home two days later.

Second time was very straightforward and it was within a couple of hours.

JustaScratch · 05/06/2020 07:07

Within the hour. DH held DD while I went. It was a bit gross though - some blood spilled on the floor and I was on my hands and knees wiping it up! I should have just left it and asked for help.

canigooutyet · 05/06/2020 07:16

I think within hours before moved onto a ward. I’m really hazy with three of them, had a week or so in hospital after.

Did someone mention bed bath? Even after a hysterectomy your expected to get in the shower unless there’s complications.

Overtired123 · 05/06/2020 07:16

5 days! It was disgusting, especially after a 48 hour labour....

I lost a lot of blood and couldn't really stand very well after forceps.... midwives thought I would pass out if i had a shower so my husband gave me a bed bath. Only showered when finally home and it felt glorious!

Herbie0987 · 05/06/2020 07:17

About an hour after the birth leaving dad with baby, when I got back to room breakfast had been delivered, only short labour so all round good experience.

bluefoxmug · 05/06/2020 07:20

first about an hour after in delivery suite which had a private bathroom.
next one 2 days later at home as delivery suite didn't have warm water and maternity ward only had 2 shower cubicles which were also used by the many men who stayed overnight on the ward. eurgh.

20viona · 05/06/2020 07:21

About 4 hours because I had to go to theatre for placenta removal and had a spinal block. It was the best yet most disgusting shower of my life. My husband watched the baby and also helped me in and out of the shower but don't know how that works at the moment with corona. Be prepared for blood dripping down your legs but you'll feel amazing after.

MayFayre · 05/06/2020 07:22

An hour? I bled a lot.

concernedforthefuture · 05/06/2020 07:24

DC1 - about 24 hrs (I'd had an epidural so couldn't really get up and about for first day). DC2 had a bath about 30 mins after he was born. It looked like a scene from jaws and as I'd forgotten to pack a towel, I had to dry myself with paper towels 😂.
Based on my experience, you were generally expected to leave baby alone in the cot when you went for a shower on the ward (visitors weren't allowed before 10am). Midwives are in and out all the time so will look in at them. Or wait until you have a visitor to sit with them. It's up to you.

Mumoblue · 05/06/2020 07:27

3 days!

I have anxiety and could not shower in the hospital. They kept asking me and I said I would do it when I got home, but they wouldn't let me leave for ages.
He was my first baby so I was a bit more meek and doing what I was told. If I did it again I'd probably have left on the second day, seeing as everything was fine, I was just waiting for permission to leave which they didn't get around to doing.

Treaclepie19 · 05/06/2020 07:31

They encouraged me to have a shower right after the stitches were done. Baby was in NICU so DH helped me a little.

drownininplaymobil · 05/06/2020 07:39

I have literally no idea. But I remember it was both the grossest and the most lovely shower I've ever had.

Spottybluepyjamas · 05/06/2020 07:41

I had my son at 10pm and went straight to sleep, and then showered at about 10am the next day

Incrediblytired · 05/06/2020 07:45

I had the baby late at night and then showered the next day - it was a grim birth though, lots went wrong and I was still catheterised. The shower was the best thing ever though. DH looked after the baby.

Angel2702 · 05/06/2020 07:45

As soon as I’d been checked etc. with all of mine I showered whilst my husband dressed them.

hopeforlucky3 · 05/06/2020 07:46

I showered about an hour after birth. I'm glad I did because I was sore and knackered after. I think the initial shock to my body made me get up and determined to shower Confused
