Am I too fat for a scan?!

Sorry I’m just freaking out a little as I have a private scan on Saturday when I will be 8+1.
I am a size 14 and short - due to eating too much, particularly in the last month, I have accumulated some extra baggage around my middle.
I am just worried they won’t be able to get to baby through my fat! Have read a few horror stories and it would just be totally mortifying!
Please tell me I’m being stupid!

I have a really far back womb and have had to have vaginal scans until well past 20 week scans.

The issue would be the 8 weeks rather than how big you are. They will probably try transabodominal first and only to transvaginal if necessary.

I’m a 14-16 and had a scan at around 8 weeks. It was an abdominal scan.

You'll be fine. I started off at size 20 and had twins- they managed to find them :)

Milnes94 · 04/06/2020 16:07

I had a scan at 8 weeks 1 day and it was NOT vaginal it was standard ultrasound on the tum. Don’t worry you’ll be fine much bigger women don’t have issues. Good luck!

I was classed as morbidly obese (size 22) and all the scans I had were clear and easy to see.

Emberfoot · 04/06/2020 19:56

I was a size 20-22 and they managed to find the heart defect my baby had on my 20wk scan despite the heart being the size of an acorn and despite my tum. You'll be absolutely fine x

Hello- I had to comment as totally empathise- I was worried too when I had my son but had a much bigger reason too- I was a size 26-28 and very overweight. A couple of the sonographers made me feel rubbish and made a point of them finding it difficult to scan due to my large belly but that being said, they were able look at everything they needed to and everything was fine.
So please don’t worry and enjoy your lovely experience of seeing your baby for the first time xx

You definitely won't be too big to be easily scanned. Although at 8 weeks it's likely to be a transvaginal scan.

sel2223 · 04/06/2020 22:17

Size 14 is not fat OP. Women of all shapes and sizes have babies, how do you think the bigger ladies have scans?
You may have to have a transvaginal scan just because it's so early, i did at 6ish weeks and I have (had) a fairly flat tummy.

I'm a short size 20 and had a private early scan at 8 weeks - was expecting an internal scan but they did an external one and I got really clear pics from it. You have nothing to worry about. Make sure have have a lot of water to drink beforehand though. Congrats and I hope the scan goes well :)
