20 week scan head measuring small

Hey ladies,

At my 20 week scan yesterday she put my due date back to the date of my last period rather than what the new date was at my 12 week scan. Only a 4 day difference but still..

My babys head is measuring small. Around a week behind. Has anyone else had this ?

Attached a picture of the percentage the middle line on the chart is average for babys age.

There is a rate of error for these scans... and the baby's head is still within normal. Out of every 100 babies, some heads will be slightly larger, and some slightly bigger.

I wouldn't give it a second thought.

My baby's head measured small from 20 week scan onwards. At my last scan at 31 weeks it was one week behind, at some scans, it's been more than one week. My due date was never changed though.

I had to have extra scan at 21 and 24 weeks due to another anomaly found and then always commented on the smaller head, but were happy that although small, the growth was following the curve.

One of the Fetal medicine experts who scanned me also said if baby is in breech position, the head measurements can be off a little as it's not the optimal position for them to measure the head.

Yours looks on the 18th percentile which seems fine to me, they start worrying when it's below 10th.

Happened to DB and SIL. Advised to have an extra scan at 29 weeks (I think). All normal at the later scan.

Hi my consultant told me that they only get in any way concerned when the measurement is in the top or bottom 5 %.

As pp said these scans are very inaccurate. I personally had growth scans every four weeks during my pregnancy. First time the femur was 22 percentile, next month it was 72 percentile the following month 53 percentile. Incidentally I was induced at 37 weeks as the scan was showing a very large baby. I am currently sat here holder my 6lb daughterHmm

Dont worry at all about this.

My baby measured on 8th percentile for head at my recent scan, most other things between 25-50th. Sonographer and midwife I saw after said it was perfectly normal to have different levels at this point in pregnancy and wasn’t something to worry about. That’s the thing about percentiles, there is a range!

Do you have a small head? I do, so maybe my baby is taking after me rather than its dad!

I had the opposite, date brought forward due to head size.
Takes after her father, large head, wore teenage hats as a toddler and many are just too small.

Hi Smartiex! I was just wondering how this ended up for you, was your baby normal size when they were born? I got very similar measurements, HC around 15th percentile, but AC above average. This got me really worried as I had a big head as a baby and so did my husband. I would very very appreciate it if you could give an update on this please 🙏
