2nd C section- scar

I had an emergency C section with DS1. My scar has never bothered me hugely and healed well, at the time I was just glad that baby was healthy. However, compared to a lot of my friends’ scars it is very high up, red and very long even after nearly 3 years.

After much deliberation I have decided to go for a planned c section this time to Hopefully have a calmer and more positive birth experience. I was just wondering out of curiosity more than anything, will they cut over the existing incision or make a new one? I’ve known some people to say they have had 2 different scars, some who have said the surgeon went over the existing scar, and others who said that the surgeon removed the old scar and made a new neater one.

The latter sounds like a good option but I’m worried that if I mention this to the surgeon I will seem really vain. It’s not high on my list of priorities but I would be lying if I said It wouldn’t be a bonus Smile just want to know what to expect really if anyone can share their experience xx

I'm interested in knowing this, had an emergency section for my first too and going to elective this time :) hopefully someone has some experience

Mummyspider27 · 30/05/2020 12:18

I asked recently and they told me they will use the same place, unless there is a medical reason not to xx

My first scar was awful - a real bodge job. The consultant in my second pregnancy couldn’t believe it when she saw it and said she didn’t know what the first surgeon was thinking to do that to me.

It was all cut away during my second section. I now have just a small, near scar from the second one.

Sunflower40 · 30/05/2020 13:49

I've been told they will use the same scar - mine is surprisingly neat & I am hoping the 2nd section doesn't leave it looking worse ☹️

My first scar was terrible and I had a lot of internal scarring for the second section the surgeon cut it all out and gave me a very neat scar. It's never caused me any trouble. First section was an emergency one second one was planned which I think allowed more time for making sure the stitching etc was good

Kezmum14 · 30/05/2020 14:24

I’ve had 3 sections and they’ve used the same scar each time, very neat scar that’s barely noticeable :)

usersouthcoast · 30/05/2020 14:26

I had two emergency csections, and they cut using the existing scar the second time. Ask hospital policy?

ScrumptiousBears · 30/05/2020 14:32

On my second CS the doctor said she'd cut out the old scar when stitching me up. Great I thought. However she never did and now I have two. 🤷🏼‍♀️

ForeverBubblegum · 30/05/2020 14:36

Mine they cut a long the same scar, but did sew it up a little more neatly second time.

SpiltMilk100 · 30/05/2020 14:56

mine is surprisingly neat & I am hoping the 2nd section doesn't leave it looking worse

Same here @Sunflower40 have my second on Monday and hoping it's as neat as the first 🤞

Thanks for the replies everyone. I have my pre op on 10th and then the C section on 11th. I don’t think I’ll see the actual surgeon until the day so I’ll have to find out then. It seems that different hospitals and surgeons do different things. I just hope it doesn’t look any worse.

@Chrysanthemum5 did the surgeon discuss that with you before the op? Or was that just what he did at the time?

@MrsBBx the only reason the scar was looked at Before
My second section was that I’d got really lucky with the consultant. I was going to pay to see her privately but when I turned up with my life savings in envelopes to pay her, she felt sorry for me and said she would see me on the nhs and do the surgery herself. So I had absolutely stunning care from her.

Now pregnant again and under consultant care (diff one obviously, just big standard nhs treatment) and no one has asked or looked and I have no idea who will be doing the surgery on the day, it will be who ever is available. Never seen my named consultant only their registrars and never the same one, it’s been shit to be fair and I don’t have high hopes.

My first c-section was an emergency and the scar was very messy, jagged and rough at the edges. They got my baby out alive so I wasn't overly bothered though. I was surprised at how much they managed to neaten it up after my 2nd, elective section. I had three in total and the single scar was relatively neat.

elp30 · 31/05/2020 01:01

I just looked.

I have two, one on top of the other so it sort of looks like one large scar.
I don't love it but I'm less enthused by the overhang left by both c-sections.
That's another topic all together.

skankingpiglet · 31/05/2020 01:15

My first CS was elective due to breech, and second was a cat 1 emergency CS. I have two scars but they are very close together, and 4yrs after the second one they are pretty faint now. The second one was very red, raised, and itchy for the first couple of years. The scars don't bother me, but the loss of feeling from CS #2 does. I never lost it after the first and was hopeful it would return after DC2's CS, but I have accepted it's very unlikely now.
