This might be a silly question but FTM here, currently 20 weeks and making first tentative steps into buying some things for baby...I know that I shouldn’t buy too many newborn clothes but I have no idea how long baby’s roughly stay in each size?
Any guidance would be much appreciated

It varies massively. Depends entirely how big they are a birth and how quickly they grow.

Mine was in 0-3 pretty much straight away and was in 3-6 by about 6 weeks. I have friends whose babies have still been wearing newborn at 6 weeks!

Mintjulia · 29/05/2020 07:30

I bought 8 new born babygrows and a mixture of other bits and pieces to add when outside the house. I was given a few outfits as well.
Assume you will need 2 or possible 3 babygrows a day - changing for baby sick or nappy failures. Expect to wash every two days.
Do you have grandparents who will enjoy buying things?
My ds grew out of those at 3 months. He was born in August so by November he needed warmer things for going out.

How long is a piece of string Grin

I've used no newborn sizes at all on DD1 and DD3 they were both too big (9lb2 and 8lb9)

M&S do a size "up to 1 month" which I think is meant to fit up to 9lbs, I got a fair bit of use out of those. I'd say go for one pack each of vests and babygros in newborn size and two packs of each in the "up to one month" size - they're only going to get bigger, and wearing something a bit big is ok.

helpwithpuppyplease · 29/05/2020 07:32

It's so variable.

DS was 8lb12oz and was in newborn/first size for a couple of weeks, then up to 1 month for another couple of weeks.
He fit into 0-3 until he was 3 months, 3-6 until he was 6 months and so on but I did know a baby at the time who was in 9-12 months at 6 months old.

KellyHall · 29/05/2020 07:36

Don't bother buying much under 3 months because you won't know how big your baby is until it's here. Dd was actually really tiny when she was born so we had to buy Tiny Baby size and Micro nappies because everything Newborn fell off! She was a few months behind on the sizes until she was about 18 months so some things I'd bought in advance ended up being unsuitable for the weather when it fit. The summer after she was born was so hot that she spent most of a couple of months in a nappy anyway.

If people want to buy stuff, stick to things not too specific for seasons, like a collapsible baby bath (great for home and camping), sleeping bags, muslins, etc.

How long is a piece of string? It's a lottery.

Ds1 was in early baby sizes for about 2 weeks, then newborn for a month or so and in 0-3 by 6 weeks old. Ds2 was skinny and long so early baby never fitted, newborn was too short but far too wide and he looked lost in 0-3 months until he was about 4 months old. I gave up with baby gros quickly with him, did far better with vests and little joggers. Both babies were average weight at birth.

pinkyboots1 · 29/05/2020 07:53

Same as with all the others..I had lots of newborn things for DS and he was out of them almost immediately as he was almost 9lb and with DD I had to almost no clothes to fit coz she weighed 5lb but even tiny baby clothes were too big.. luckily everyone went 'baby crazy' and I got lots and lots of gorgeous presents.
I'd wait if possible till you're about 30-34 weeks and see how baby is growing, that might help give you an idea on size you'll need

catfeets · 29/05/2020 08:00

It's really difficult to prepare until you know the size of the baby.
Mine is still in newborn size at 14wks and she was a normal sized baby at birth, just short. We've bought tons of clothes and most will be wasted now as they will be the wrong seasons. She won't be in 3-6mth summer clothes until winter Confused

Mummyspider27 · 29/05/2020 08:14

Agree there is no way to tell. My daughter has always been small. Wore 3-6m at a year and 9-12m at 2 years old. She is 5 now and just going into 3-4 years (always has and still does track the 2nd centile for weight). I am 33 weeks pregnant with a boy and have no idea if he will be the same or not! Xx

winniesanderson · 29/05/2020 08:31

My youngest was 8lb13 and was practically squashed into the newborn babygro we put her in after birth. She was very long bodied. We got a few weeks out of the up to one month stuff. It then levelled out a bit, but she has always been in the next size up before she's hit that age. Even if by a few weeks. She's still tall for her age.

Bumpsadaisie · 29/05/2020 08:32

Depends on baby. Never used newborn with mine but they were both extraordinarily long babies! My little ds's skinny legs went on forever.

BarbiesWorld · 29/05/2020 08:34

DD and DS were both fairly average birth weights but only ti y baby clothes fitted for the first couple of weeks. Then newborn until about 6 - 8 weeks. DD then followed all of the sizes pretty much perfectly but DS has been piling on weight since he hit 6 weeks, is currently 3 months and filling 3-6 month clothes so I suspect will generally be at least one size ahead going forward.

I know someone with a 10 month old who wears age 2-3 years. It's so variable.

Indigogirl88 · 29/05/2020 08:40

Oh god I'm the same op, I'm 21 weeks and going for 5 baby grows in each size up to 3 months, I'm thinking baby will be born in October so going into colder months, therefore I'll probably not buy any fancy outfits for the 1st month and then go to Asda when I know roughly big she'll be by say Christmas for a few bits. If people buy stuff in between then they can be used for that size when she gets there. I'm also thinking with a girl I can use tights on colder days and cardigans over a possibly summer outfit if I mess it up a bit 😂

Colouringinbook · 29/05/2020 09:37

It depends on how big baby is and how quick they grow! My DS never fitted in newborn and went straight into 0-3 months, outgrew them at 2 months! Once he started wearing outfits it was different again as he's got a longer body than legs so gets through tops quicker than trousers!

I also found we got a lot of baby clothes gifted over the first 6 months so actually didn't need to buy very much!

Prettylittlelady · 29/05/2020 13:30

Thank you for all the responses and advice, sounds like I’ll just need to get a couple of newborn bits and maybe more up to one month. I just don’t want to over buy - and like someone has said about grandparents- I’m sure other people including excited grandparents will be buying things too.

@Indigogirl88 I’m also expecting a girl in October - great point about the tights and cardigans! Maybe I’ll go for a few bigs for layering and I was thinking as winter will be coming fairly soon after October a pram suit would be a necessity too?

My 50th percentile boy was in newborn for the first 4-6 weeks and then switched to 0-3 months . He was slow to put on weight and we didn’t switch to 3-6 until he was 4 months . After that he was true to size . He’s 15 months now .

Prettylittlelady · 29/05/2020 19:18

Thank you @MichelleOR84 that’s helpful as little girl was measuring around 50th at 20 week scan.

TooMinty · 29/05/2020 19:30

Don't go overboard before baby is born, just get a packet of vests and babygros in newborn size and a packet in 0-3 months. You will get loads of clothes as presents probably. And growth scans aren't always reliable, my DS2 was "measuring big" and turned out a normal 8lb baby!

Duckchick · 29/05/2020 19:37

As everyone else has said, depends entirely on the baby. I'd get 3 or 4 newborn Babygros and a more 0-3 months. If it's a smaller baby and you run out of clean newborn stuff you can always use 0-3 months temporarily until you can get more newborn.

Unfortunately they also don't grow predictably - DD was over 9 lb at birth, in 6-9 month clothes by 4 months but then slowed right down and now is 25th centile and still wearing some 2-3 clothes at age 3.5.

ThatDreamSheep · 29/05/2020 19:46

My little girl was in newborn for about 3 weeks, then up to 1 month until she was about 3 months old, then in 0-3 months until she was 7 months and now at 10 months is still in 3-6! She was 7lb 4oz born so not tiny but now hovers around the 9th centile. My son on the other hand was born 7lb 6oz and stayed true to size the whole time (in 3-6 month clothing at 3 months etc) and he was nearer the 91st centile.

SpillTheTeaa · 29/05/2020 19:50

Completely depends on your baby. My LB was still wearing first size when he was around 2 months. He was just a little dink.

CloMo1995 · 03/06/2020 09:33

Depends on baby tbh, my oldest son was in tiny baby for months, but he was born early. My second son was in newborn for about 2 weeks and then grew so quickly he practically skipped size 6-9 months, hes now just turned 4 and I have to buy him 5-6 years in clothes. But my daughter was born full term at 39 weeks, was 8lbs but was in tiny baby for at least 6 weeks because of how short she was. Shes now 19 months and still mainly in 9-12 months clothes. It just depends on the baby but I always say dont go ott on newborn until they are here because you have no way of knowing.
