if you are self employed you can claim maternity allownace about £112/week - you can download the forms just google maternity allowance - beware they run to 39 pages and are bloody complicated to fill in but you can do it online....

Hi yes Maternity Allowance.
Confusing form but you don't need all the wage slips etc. they ask for, just your maternity certificate- as long as you pay class1 Ni you are eligible.

ty ty! seems like so much money...

it wasn;t til my sister pointed out properly employed people got six months paid, that i realised i might get a raw deal in comparison

i just assumed i'd be broke ;-)

will ring helpline tomo about this, but does anyone know what determines how long you're entitled to the money? it says "up to 39 weeks"

cheers

There are intial qualifying questions but legally everyone entitles to 39 weeks now I think??

pinkyminky · 20/09/2007 22:01

As I recall it depends on how long you have been working for within the dates specified according to your due date (see the rather confusing chart). I think you have to work for 14 weeks in the period. You can choose when you MA starts. I'm not sure how long it is for because it's probably changed since I was on leave. Don't forget to claim your tax credit, if you are not in receipt of it already. MA is not counted as income for this. We missed out on quite a lot because I didn't get it sorted.
