Protein bars safe in pregnancy?

Hey Ladies,

Have heard different things around eating protein bars when pregnant. I have only eaten a few during this pregnancy but researched yesterday and seen conflicting views. (19 weeks preg)

I usually eat grenade carb killa high protein bars if any. Just wondering if this is safe? I would ask my midwife but it usually takes her or any of her team atleast a week or 2 to get back to me!

Thanks

What does the nhs guidance say to avoid? Does it say to avoid protein?

@physicskate no need to check NHS...protein in take is of course very important in pregnancy.

-But protein bars have conflicting reviews as they are not the same kind of protein from lean meats etc and have additives.

I guess it would depend upon whether you're eating them instead of normal food? You shouldn't be cutting out any food groups whilst pregnant in case you become deficient in certain vitamins and nutrients for your baby.

I honestly wouldn’t. Just based on the ingredient list.

When not pregnant and in lockdownHmm... I am a keen weight lifter so always have extra protein. Usually in form of PhD protein powder. But there’s no way I’ll have stuff like that when pregnant. There’s just too many ‘odd’ ingredients.

To keep my muscle mass up throughout pregnancy have just upped my ‘food’ protein. Nuts, eggs etc..

Not sure if that helps, just my opinion.

If you’ve got enough time on your hands- maybe make some bars yourself. With oats, almonds, dark choc, dates, a bit of honey. ☺️

When in doubt it's best not to eat them...

Can you make homemade bars with no additives ?

Smartiex · 24/05/2020 10:49

@MummyMilla thanks ..yes just for extras!

I bet you can find a recipe with a very similar macros (carbs/protein/fat ratio).

You could wrap them all up separately so you feel like you are having the convenience of a bought bar. Can take out when you go for walks etc...
