Morning ladies I was just wondering how many of you actually sleep on your left side. I'm 27 weeks pregnant and always sleep on my right hand side but I'm really trying to change my sleeping position to sleep more on my left as I know this is what's recommended but I'm really worried that I'm not able to do it for long and what harm this might have on the baby.

Hi bells, I always sleep on my right too because of previous hip issues and I continued this throughout pregnancy. I think it’s sleeping on your back that is the most risky, so sleeping on either side is fine.

Saying that, now that I’m in week 30, both hips are equally achey so I probably spend equal amount of time on my left now too!

I found a wrap around pregnancy pillow has been really helpful in keeping me in position while I’m asleep and stopping me from rolling onto my back

Hi there, I think the nhs say that sleeping on the left or right is ok, it’s sleeping on your back which is not recommended.

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy! x

I think any position is fine as long as you don't lie on your back? I sleep on my front and I'm 37 week's or sides never been able to sleep on my back anyway.

I wouldn't worry too much about which side you're sleeping on, someone else may say totally different though... Grin

I sleep on my sides using one of the dreamgeni pillows but I find that my legs feel so so heavy every night that I have to turn from side to side very frequently as my legs and hips feels dead and sore. Anyone else have this? I remember in my first pregnancy I used a duvet under me but not until much later so I’m think il have to start that soon. I also find if I wake up in the night for whatever reason- toilet, toddler, etc then that’s me awake for two hours easily! The joys of pregnancy!

i'm typically a front-sleeper but i was doing ok sleeping on either side until around 29 weeks - i have a big theraline pillow to support me and typically i would start off on my left side then eventually switch to the other as that got too uncomfy.

i've got such bad hip & pelvis pain now though that i can't do either anymore, it's become impossible for my to turn over in bed. i've resorted to sleeping sitting up/reclined against a bunch of pillows. it's vile, i just want to lie down Sad i'm so not looking forward to another 6 or 7 weeks of this!

NHS says either side is fine for safety and I have been sleeping on my right.

That said, at my antenatal classes this week the course organiser (a midwife) said that sleeping on the left in late pregnancy is better for encouraging the baby to take up a good position for birth, so now I'm trying to do that..idk why but it hurts my hips much more - gah!
