I am now about 8 weeks pregnant with my third baby and suffering with the most chronic sickness all day. I live in Spain and have been to the local Pharmacy, who have given me some tablets that just don't work. I am due to visit an English speaking Clinic next week, but are currently just hanging on there until then.

Does anyone have any tips as to what might help.

Any help is really appreciated.

Horrid I know - you unfortunately just have to hang on in there - eat little and often - graze eat if possible, drink very cold fizzy (non caffeine) drinks - tonic water helped me as you can 'burp' something then (don't ask me why it helps but it does) Use seabands - they def took the edge off.

Good luckx

I am in the same boat, am only 6 weeks tho. its a horrible feeling isn't it.

I keep drinking sparkling water, and eating very plain carbohydrate food quite often as feel worse when I haven't eaten for a while.

Feeling very sick as I type. This is my 3rd pregnancy and didn't feel this sick with my first two, am sure.

Hope you get lots of replies.

3sEnough · 19/09/2007 17:20

Yup - I was the wrost with my 3rd - nauseous with the first 2 but actively vom with no3 - it stops though and is then just as easy as the 1 and 2 (if you discount the varicose veins etc!)

kerioke · 19/09/2007 17:22

aww girls i really feel for you... my morning sickness was pretty mild and shortlived this time round, but with my first 2 i suffered awful... and found different things helped with each one...

with my first pregnancy ginger was the key to easing my sickness especially the nausea... i sipped ginger beer throughout the day, nibbled on a couple of ginger biscuits before getting up in the morning and on really bad days actually had a teaspoon of dried ginger first thing. i cant tell you how much it helped.

with baby number 2 i had to eat a slice of marmite on toast in bed before rising (poor dp!) then i had to nibble on something hourly... at 20 weeks i was at the end of my tether and discovered travel sickness bands... they really helped...

hope you find some of this useful! i think the key things are eating little and often and nibbling on something dry before rising (like crackers or biscuits) xxx

My shopping trolley will just look great on Friday. At the moment I am managing yohurts, plain pringles, sponge cake and fruit and fruit juice. I crave anything acidic.

I am totally off meat, event the thought of meat is making me feel ill as I type. Although I have just managed to eat a little bowl of pasta with a little bacon in it.

My mum says Arrowroot biscuits and ginger biscuit are really good, but I can't get them here. I wonder what the equivalent is.

I will get some tonic as I just love that. Does anyone know if non-alcoholic larger is okay.

Homeopathy ? Make sure you consult a practioner about what to take though.

Acupuncture did marvels for me

sips of Peppermint tea or sucking on mints or ice lollies/ ice cubes.

Eating dry biscuits ( pref ginger) before I got up out of bed..sometimes your blood sugar is the problem.

I couldn't even go outside when i was initially pregnant as I was staying in a city hotel- the smell of coffee, fried foods, rubbish bins...made me dry retch !!

plain Carbs- plain bread, pasta with no sauce, dry cereal...eating fruit and veg went out the window for the first 6 weeks

hotpotmama · 19/09/2007 17:34

The worst thing is cooking for the children all the things that are currently making me wretch, like salmon - yukkk

Twinklewishes · 19/09/2007 17:45

I am quite lucky. My oldest daughter is enjoying helping me in the kitchen and cooking all the things I can't face.

I don't drink larger at all, but have a real craving for it and I don't know why and I don't know where it came from. I would not dare to drink whilst pregnant, but wondered if non-alcoholic brands were ok. I would rather not bother if I can help it.

What I meant to say is, is it okay to drink non-alcoholic larger?

another vote for travel sickness acupressure bands, they were the only thing that helped this time round (also used them first time round) - had to wear them just about 24/7 though

first time round ginger in any form helped - but I think I overdosed on it, as can't bear anything gingery since

stressteddy · 19/09/2007 18:32

Lemonade - not diet, go for the full fat variety
Poor thing you - it will pass
Congrats by the way
xx

Peachy · 19/09/2007 18:34

Poor you, I am just recovering from this- nightmare

Search on blooming awful, there's a wonderful website there (hyperemesis group) with a big list of self help tips on teh menu.

Don't take tablets from the pharmacy- very few medications are licensed here for pg women! Check out the meds list on that site as well, but see if you can gets oemthing proper prescribed.

And rest- linked to thsi.

And worry mroe about fluid than food, as dehydratin biggest worry,

take care X

Peachy · 19/09/2007 18:35

that's easier than searching

Twinklewishes · 20/09/2007 18:06

Thank you so much for the link. It describes my syptoms very much. I am going to take some information from it to my Doctors appointment next week.

It is great to swap thoughts, ideas and even meal suggestions if you have any.

For those interested, I feel so sick today, I can not think, speak, smell or even look at food. I managed a Fairy cake minus the cream, an apple and a yoghurt for my dinner. I have taken to trying a malted milk drink in the morning just to fill me up a little with a couple of biscuits.

I read that this is normal up to about 12 or 14 weeks. I really hope not.

I just want to eat, I am soooooo hungry, but can not face anything. I have made two meals tonight and can not face either now I have made them. I am going to try a slice of dry bread and water. Hope it helps

Thank you to everyone, I should say.

There is some wonderful things to try. I am going to get some ginger biscuits sent over from England if I can.

Thanks

Hi twinkletoes (and everyone else)
Thanks for the blooming awful link - we have just moved house and only got the internet back this evening - after six weeks away from it - I discovered I was pregnant 3 days after we moved in - very unexpected as DH had chemo last December which they said would make him infertile!
anyway I am even sicker this pregnancy than the last one - having lost 4lbs in 2 weeks (more effective than weightwatchers ) and being totally unable to work, get out of bed, look after DS or DH (who is disabled) the GP finally relented and prescribed me stemetil. I am already feeling so much better and can function now - I'm just annoyed that it took so much arguing with the GP and near-hospitalisation to get the drugs.
It just seems that women are told to put up with it and accept that it's a normal part of pregnancy - I do accept that there are risks with drugs but I do think the medics are overly cautious - what does anyone else think?
does anyone have any experiences with prescribed meds?

BandofMothers · 21/09/2007 07:28

Try the travel sickness wrist bands, they can really help with nausea. I also carried a pack of ginger nuts around with me. and also stocked up on Polo mints. The peppermint is good for settling the stomach and the minty taste made me feel better, but only while I was sucking it, so I got thru a lot of them.

peppermint tea is quite good. I practically lived on cheese baguettes, sometimes with pickle in, during my all day sickness with DD1. Didn't touch one again for ages after it passed tho

Also try to cut back caffeine (right when you need it) cos that made me worse.

BandofMothers · 21/09/2007 07:33

I think the problem is that most drugs cannot be tested on pg women so no one really knows what they will do. I knew a woman whose GP was really reluctant even to give antibiotics for a horrible case of Flu. Simply cos they didn't know if it would do anything to the baby. In the end it was decided that the risk to the baby from gut wrenching coughing was probably greater and he prescribed. It's up to the individual really, but I wouldn't take prescription drugs unless it was absolutely neccesary. And to be fair, it IS a normal part of pregnancy. Of course there are extreme cases, but most women would rather feel sick and wretched than risk taking something that might harm the baby.

mumbleboo · 21/09/2007 09:05

I'm finding it really hard that cos i'm only 7 weeks i don't really want to tell anyone i'm pregnant yet, so i have no sympathy for why i'm being so pathetic. I'd forgotten how bad the sickness was in my last pregnancy, until now... Hope everyone feels less sicky today! It's dificult to look after DS and so i feel guilty about that too!

chipmonkey · 21/09/2007 09:56

mumbleboo, I'm with you there! We have told immediate family though. Only thing is that dh let it slip to the kids. I hadn't wanted them knowing in case something went wrong. Well, yesterday our creche manager pulled me aside and congratulated me! Ds2 had told her AND the school bus-driver that "Mammy is getting another baby and she's vomiting a lot!" Clearly no secrets around here!

Lorayn · 21/09/2007 10:05

Hey twinkle, I too am suffering awfully from this!!
I'm managing three/four cans of pop a day, thats it!
I darent even try to eat, last night I ate for the first time in three days and ended up straight in the bathroom, it was horrid, i prefer not to eat than have that!!
Just remember, it is meant to get better at around 12 weeks

moominsmummy · 21/09/2007 10:09

lorayn - hate to depress you but my sickness lasted for 5 months last time - hopefully yours will suddenly stop on Monday!
One thing I have learnt this time is that you really need to keep in contact with the GP so they can do regular urine samples to check you are not getting really unwell - saw my GP this morning who is sending me for a scan tomorrow (saturday!!)to check it's not twins ---

now I am worried!!!! twins!! arghhh!

Mocat · 21/09/2007 10:56

So reassuring to hear about all your stories of being sick (though I wouldn't wish it on anyone). Six weeks in and I had being feeling dodgy when it was time to eat until this morning when serious sickness kicked in. I'd forgotten how awful this stage was. Last time I couldn't stand the smell of my husband's face and was even sick over him once. Can't give my 4 year old much decent attention which makes me feel wick. Think I'll head to Tesco's and stock up on crackers, ginger tea and all the other things you have recommended. Good luck to you all!

mumbleboo · 21/09/2007 10:58

lol at your DS chipmonkey! That's what my dad is like, hence him not being told yet!

mumbleboo · 21/09/2007 11:01

moominsmummy that sounds scary! am a bit worried about that due to my enormous tummy - far too big for 7 weeks as the baby should onluy be about 0.5 cm long - really hoping i am further long than thought and so the sickness will be over soon.
